Description: Intertidal inhabitants are exposed to the 24-hour solar day, and the 12.4 hour rising and falling of the tides. One or both of these cycles govern intertidal organisms’ behaviour and physiology, yet little is known about the molecular clockworks of tidal rhythmicity. Here, we show that the limpet Cellana rota exhibits robust tidally rhythmic behaviour and gene expression. We assembled a de-novo transcriptome, identifying novel tidal, along with known circadian clock genes. Surprisingly, most of the putative circadian clock genes, lack a typical rhythmicity. We identified numerous tidally rhythmic genes and pathways commonly associated with the circadian clock. We show that not only is the behaviour of an intertidal organism in tune with the tides, but so too are many of its genes and pathways. These findings highlight the plasticity of biological timekeeping in nature, strengthening the growing notion that the role of ‘canonical’ circadian clock genes may be more fluid than previously thought, as exhibited in an organism which has evolved in an environment where tidal oscillations are the dominant driving force.

Notes: [Auszug] Circadian rhythms are now known to exist in most physiological parameters1, and have also been found to affect the efficiency with which man performs various tasks3. Performance speed on simple tasks, that place little reliance on short term memory, shows a rise throughout the day (with the ...

Notes: [Auszug] In fat pad mitochondria incubated with oxoglutarateand malate in the presence of 32Pi? we have found that the only appreciably phosphorylated protein component within the mitochondria is the a subunit of pyruvate dehydrogenase. Moreover, since the incorporation of phosphate into this subunit is ...

Notes: [Auszug] The Star of Bethlehem was probably a triple conjunction of Saturn and Jupiter in the constellation of Pisces, the significance of which was only obvious to the Magi of Babylonia. This occurred in 7 BC and events indicate that Jesus Christ was probably born in the Autumn of that year, around ...

Notes: [Auszug] IT has been said that a week is a long time in politics and things are becoming almost as fluid in membrane research. Since 1973, for instance, when much of the material in this book was prepared, the complete sequence of a transmembrane protein has been established by Marchesi and his colleagues. ...

Notes: [Auszug] STARS and planets, galaxies and space are topics of tremendous interest to many non-scientific members of the general public. In fact astronomy is second only to natural history in the layman's top ten of scientific subjects, and this is amply reflected in the plethora of popular astronomy books ...
