    Notes: Double-loop tendons of fixed and adjustable lengths, and tendons with inner porous tapes both for anastomosis to tendon stumps have been made from readily available materials. By using stainless steel wire and polymer fibers, breakloads have been obtained that range from 20 to 100 lb and elongations have been reduced to less than 2%. Pore sizes up to 50 × 250 μ2 were achieved by using woven, knitted, and braided polyester tapes. For all tendons, Silastic was used to isolate inner fibers and to effect smooth gliding. Preliminary evaluation of these devices, after being implanted in the feet of chickens for 4 weeks, indicates that anastomotic strength of unions formed by use of loops is about 1000 g compared to more than 2000 for unions formed by tissue ingrowth.

    Description / Table of Contents: Universal accelerated weathering cabinet for weathering tests of metals and protective coatingsThe authors have developed a accelerated weathering cabinet with visual observation of specimens during the test. The temperature can be controlled between 0 and 50°C by a current of warm air and a thermostat, while a humidification device enables the relative humidity to be controlled between 50 and 95%. Aggressive additions such as sulphur dioxide, aerosols, salt spray etc. are added through a spray system. Sulphur dioxide concentrations can be controlled between 0.1 and 10 ppm and 1 to 100 ppm respectively.

    Notes: The characteristics of Monvelle, a new biconstituent fiber from nylon 6 and a segmented polyurethane, are reviewed briefly, and some of the technical problems inherent in producing such a fiber are discussed. The characterization of two series of polyurethanes which can be melt spun is given in detail. The chemical composition of the hard segment was maintained constant, being derived from 4,4′-diphenylmethane diisocyanate (MDI) and 1,4-butanediol, in all polymers. In one series using poly(butylene adipate) of MW 2000 as the soft segment, the average hard segment content was varied from 33% to 54%. In the other series, the hard segment content was held at 43%, and three additional soft segments, each at MW 2000, were used: poly(ethylene adipate), polycaprolactone and poly-1,4-oxybutylene glycol (PBG). Characterizations include molecular weight distributions, thermal analysis, rheological studies, and selected small-angle and wide-angle x-ray diffraction and polarized light microscopy. Crystallinity, melt viscosity, and activation energy of flow increased with increasing hardsegment content. Changes in the polyester soft segments had little effect on the properties studied, but with PBG the crystalline melting point of the polymer, without annealing, was higher and the melt viscosity was slightly higher than corresponding polyester-based samples, in agreement with previous reports of sharper phase separation in polyether urethanes, compared to polyester urethanes.

    Notes: A convenient method is described for the synthesis of ABA triblock copolymers having a high vinyl polyisoprene as center block and poly(methyl methacrylate) as end blocks. Dynamic mechanical properties of these copolymers as a function of temperature are compared for different compositions (100%, 85%, 70%, 60%, 50%, and 30% of rubber) using solvent-casting methods. Since the morphology is dependent on the method of preparation of the samples, five solvents of different solubility parameters were tested for the same copolymer (i.e., 70% polyisoprene by weight) to show their influence on mechanical behavior.

    Notes: Disk-shaped implants of spinel, alumina, mullite, zircon, a cast Co-Cr-Mo alloy, and ultra-high molecular weight polyethylene (UHMWPE), were implanted in the paraspinalis muscle of 12 adult, male, white New Zealand rabbits. Prior to implantation the implants were characterized with respect to size and shape, weight and surface roughness. After periods of 1 month, 2 months, and 4 months, the rabbits were sacrificed and the tissue specimens were retrieved with the implants still intact. Histological examination of the tissues surrounding the implants along with changes in the size and shape, weight, and surface roughness of the implants were used a criteria for evaluating these materials for implant purposes.No surface degradation of any of the materials was detected using scanning electron microscopy. Fibrous tissue seemed to adhere to the UHMWPE implants more than any other material used in this study. Large amounts of fibrous tissue were also found to adhere to the cast Co-Cr-Mo alloy implants.The histological results indicated that within the limits of this investigation, the biocompatibility of the ceramic materials used in this study compared favorably with the clinically used Co-Cr-Mo alloy implants and the UHMWPE implants.

    Notes: The curing of bone cements is accompanied by release of polymerization heat and, hence, by a temperature rise of the curing cement mass. This temperature rise causes expansion of enclosed air bubbles and evaporation of the volatile monomer. An overall expansion of 3 to 5 vol % has been mentioned in the literature. It has often been stated that this expansion favours the fixation of metal endoprostheses in the marrow cavity of bone.To check for the influence of this expansion on linear dimensions of the cured cement mass we filled stainless steel cylinders with a precision bore of 22,000 ± 0,005 mm and a length of 120 mm with bone cement. After curing of the cement in a environment of 37°C the resulting cement rod was released from the cylinder and the diameter of the rod was measured at 37°C.The influence of the “foaming effect” on the transverse dimensions of the rods was studied by curing the cement at 37°C and 2 atm air pressure in a high-pressure-vessel. This method of curing eliminates porosity in the cement almost completely, so that curing shrinkage is to be expected rather than expansion of the cement mass.The results indicate that a volumetric expansion of the cement during curing of cylindrical rods in laboratory experiments, can be accompanied by a linear diametrical shrinkage of the cement mass. The explanation of this phenomenon is to be sought in the fact that the volumetric expansion takes place at a time when the cement is still plastic; by the formation of gas bubbles, the cement is forced in longitudinal direction into the cylinder and when the temperature of the mass has passed through a maximum, the cooling of the cement mass results in a thermal shrinkage of approximately 0.4% linearly.Extrapolating this laboratory result to a clinical situation one might doubt whether the overall expansion of bone cements during curing will result in a permanent positive pressure on the walls of marrow cavity and whether it will contribute to a better fixation of endoprostheses than in the case of a, still hypothetical, nonporous cement.

    Notes: Heats of mixing of methanol with butyl isobutyrate and with oligomers of butyl methacrylate (monomer to tetramer) having a butoxyl group on one chain end have been measured. To discuss the effect of hydrogen bonding on the heat values, it is appropriate to correlate the heat per mole of binding sites with the binding site fraction. This dependence can be described by a single curve for all oligomers studied, in contrast to the results obtained in a previous paper for the same oligomers with chloroform. This fact suggests that the binding parameters for methanol are not influenced by the degree of polymerization.

    Notes: Fourier transform infrared spectra have been obtained for polyethylene irradiated in oxygen and nitrogen atmospheres. The spectra before and after irradiation have been compared by digital subtraction. The difference spectra are indicative of changes caused by irradiation. Crosslinking and chain scission reactions produce the observed changes.

    Notes: The polymerization of N-ethyl-2-vinylcarbazole and N-ethyl-3-vinylcarbazole by an anionic mechanism has been demonstrated. Polymerization reactions were monitored by ultraviolet/visible spectroscopy and λmax and ε values for the propagating carbanions determined. The 2-vinyl monomer exhibits all the features of a standard “living” polymer; the carbanion is stable at ambient temperatures and high molecular weight, M̄n ≃ 106, narrow distribution polymers and block copolymers with styrene have been prepared. The carbanion from the 3-vinyl monomer is much less stable and a clean polymerization can only be conducted at temperatures below -60°C. A comparison of the anionic polymerization characteristics of the N-, 2-, and 3-vinyl carbazole monomer series is presented.
