Notizen: The photolysis of copolymers of methyl acrylate and methyl methacrylate, covering the entire composition range, is studied with the copolymers in the form of film and in solution, under vacuum and in an atmosphere of oxygen. In film under vacuum, copolymers with high acrylate contents become insoluble, and cross-linking and chain scission may be separated by application of the Charlesby-Pinner equation to sol-gel separation data. Otherwise, the polymer remains soluble, chain scission predominates and may be measured by the changes in number average molecular weight. Differences in the characteristics of chain scission under the four sets of conditions are accounted for in terms of physical factors, such as glass transition temperatures and “cage” recombination of radicals, and chemically in terms of the alternative reactions available to the primary radicals involved.

Notizen: The von Karman analogy between heat transfer and momentum transfer in turbulent fluids is shown to apply to heat transfer through wavy liquid films in horizontal, stratified, gas-liquid flow. Nusselt numbers predicted from the analogy are shown to be in good agreement with experimental data for air-water flows involving three-dimensional wavy films and large-amplitude roll waves. The Nusselt numbers encountered with these turbulent water films are found to be in the same range as those associated with condensation of organics in horizontal tubes under stratified flow conditions.

Notizen: A new apparatus is described for measuring the permeability of polymer films to sulfur dioxide at partial pressures down to 2 Pa. It employs a permeation tube technique for establishing the partial pressure gradient and a detection system based on the absorption of light at 213.8 nm. Data on the permeability to sulfur dioxide of a range of polymer films are presented and discussed.

Beschreibung: Three aluminum honeycomb sandwich conical shells with a 120 apex angle and a 4.6-m (15.0-ft) base diameter were loaded to failure by a uniform external pressure. The cones differed from one another only in the thickness of their respective face sheets. Test specimen details, test procedure, and test results are discussed. Both buckling and prebuckling data are compared with appropriate theoretical predictions, and good agreement was obtained between test and theory. Extensive imperfection measurements were made and reported on the three cones in the as fabricated condition.

Beschreibung: A method for predicting permanent cyclic creep deflections in stiffened panel structures was developed. The resulting computer program may be applied to either the time-hardening or strain-hardening theories of creep accumulation. Iterative techniques were used to determine structural rotations, creep strains, and stresses as a function of time. Deflections were determined by numerical integration of structural rotations along the panel length. The analytical approach was developed for analyzing thin-gage entry vehicle metallic-thermal-protection system panels subjected to cyclic bending loads at high temperatures, but may be applied to any panel subjected to bending loads. Predicted panel creep deflections were compared with results from cyclic tests of subsize corrugation and rib-stiffened panels. Empirical equations were developed for each material based on correlation with tensile cyclic creep data and both the subsize panels and tensile specimens were fabricated from the same sheet material. For Vol. 1, see N75-21431.

Beschreibung: Cyclic and steady-state creep tests were performed to provide data which were used to develop predictive equations. These equations, describing creep as a function of stress, temperature, and time, were developed through the use of a least squares regression analyses computer program for both the steady-state and cyclic data sets. Comparison of the data from the two types of tests, revealed that there was no significant difference between the cyclic and steady-state creep strains for the L-605 sheet under the experimental conditions investigated (for the same total time at load). Attempts to develop a single linear equation describing the combined steady-state and cyclic creep data resulted in standard errors of estimates higher than obtained for the individual data sets. A proposed approach to predict elemental creep in metals uses the cyclic creep equation and a computer program which applies strain and time hardening theories of creep accumulation.
