Notes: [Auszug] ALTHOUGH the interpretation of Martinez and Colombo1 may be correct, their conclusions are based on uncertain evidence and an alternative explanation that fits within the classical scheme is equally plausible. Their argument rests entirely on the statement that "foetal haemoglobin (HbF) levels show ...

Notes: Abstract The problem of diffusion-limited reactions is treated in lattice theory. We calculate the probability that a mobile interstitial by jump diffusion reaches a site of the recombination region around a vacancy (assumed to be given) if it starts at a distanceR p from the vacancy. We show that the continuum treatment with the recombination region represented by a spherical volume with an effective recombination radiusR a is a good approximation even for small regions and short diffusion paths. We give an explicit expression forR a in terms of the Green's function for stationary diffusion. The results for cubic lattices are discussed for recombination regions containing 1 to about 100 sites. As a rule of thumb we find that the effective recombination radiusR a is equal to the average distance $$\bar R$$ of the surface sites from the recombination center.

Notes: Abstract The influence of long range potentials on the stationary rate of diffusion controlled reactions is studied. It is shown that the concept of a reaction radiusR a can be retained but due to the potentialR a becomes temperature dependent, e.g. for attractive potentials decreases with increasing temperature. We give a perscription how to calculateR a . For spherically symmetric potentials the problem can be solved exactly whereas for anisotropic potentials approximate results are obtained with the help of a variational principle. For strong potentials of the formϕ(r)=−α f(Ω)/r n the powern alone determines the temperature dependence ofR a whereas the angular functionf(Ω) determines the absolute value. Purely attractive power potentials (f(Ω)=1) yield approximatelyR a ≅(α/kT)1/n .

Description / Table of Contents: Abstract This paper is concerned with the structure ofH(L, h), the space of hypernormballs on the linear spaceL. Relations betweenH(L, h) and interval spaces in the sense of O. Mayer [7] are given. IfP is an Archimedian ordered linear space possessing an order unit, the hypernormh∶ L→P + is a factorization of a norm onL. Furthermore it is shown that the real quasilinear spaces which can be regarded as subspaces of interval spaces are characterized by the absence of additive inverse elements to symmetric elements.

Notes: Abstract Fusarium roseum f. sp.gibbosum andF. roseum f. sp.semitectum were isolated from blighted culms of grain sorghum. Zearalenol and 8′-hydroxyzearalenone were produced by these isolates cultured on grain sorghum or cracked yellow field corn. Zearalenol is reported to have uterotropic activity and might be an important mycotoxin in sorghum.

Notes: Abstract This paper describes an investigation of the special problems of single mode operation in cw dye lasers. Single mode operation in homogeneously broadened lasers can be obtained, if the gain due to spatial hole burning is compensated by dispersive elements, as prisms, Fabry-Pérot etalons and single dielectric interfaces within the resonator. The gain and the influence of the dispersive elements were calculated for two commonly used types of resonators. The calculations make it possible to design simple continuously tunable single-mode systems.

Notes: Abstract This paper is concerned with two-point boundary value problems for systems of differential equations and integro-differential equations. If ϕ, ψ and Φ, Ψ are functions which satisfy certain differential (integro-differential) inequalities, then the given problem has a solutionu * such that ϕ≦u *≦ψ and Φ≦u *′≦Ψ.

Notes: Summary A comparison is made between the incidences of sister chromatid exchanges (SCE) per chromosome and group of chromosomes and breakage, visible at metaphase like open gaps, breaks, and breaks involved in chromatid interchange formation (CI) in Bloom's syndrome. It can be shown that the two levels of breakage SCE and CI are not correlated as to the locations. The discussion deals with possible interpretations of preferential breakage and reunion at certain homologous chromosomes and the difficulties today to understand SCEs.

Notes: Abstract Cell suspension cultures from parsley (Petroselinum hortense Hoffm.) were labelled in vivo with [2-3H] adenosine. The RNA isolated from the ribosomal pellet was fractionated on an oligo(dT)-cellulose column. Approximately 1.5% of the RNA, representing about 15% of the total radioactivity, was retained at high salt concentrations and eluted at low ionic strength. As determined by two independent methods, this fraction contained poly(A) segments with an average length of about 80 nucleotides. It was active as template in a cell-free system from wheat germ, directing the synthesis of peptides ranging in molecular weight from about 4000–40000 daltons.
