Notes: The suitability of hornblende as a support for immobilized β-fructofuranosidase (invertase) was studied, with regard to the physical stability of the support and the thermal and operational stability of the immobilized enzyme. Hornblende was more stable than Enzacryl-Alo or Enzacryl-TIO, and marginally more stable than porous glass. Invertase immobilized on hornblende was more stable during long-term operation than invertase immobilized on porous glass. An active preparation of immobilized invertase was obtained also on pyroxene particles.

Description: The results of a program of experimental and analytical research in casing treatments over axial compressor rotor blade tips are presented. Circumferential groove, axial-skewed slot and blade angle slot treatments were tested at low speeds. With the circumferential groove treatment the stalling flow was reduced 5.8% at negligible efficiency sacrifice. The axial-skewed slot treatment improved the stalling flow by 15.3%; 1.8 points in peak efficiency were sacrificed. The blade angle slot treatment improved the stalling flow by 15.0%; 1.4 points in peak efficiency were sacrificed. The favorable stalling flow situations correlated well with observations of higher-than-normal surface pressures on the rotor blade pressure surfaces in the tip region, and with increased maximum diffusions on the suction surfaces. Annulus wall pressure gradients, especially in the 50 to 75% chord region, are also increased and blade surface pressure loadings are shifted toward the trailing edge for treated configurations.

Notes: Two kinds of errors are found in protein models made with the tool of Rubin and Richardson. Global errors result from the accumulation of many errors too small to localize, while local errors are assignable to particular bends in the model. We here locate the sources of local errors, and show how to minimize both kinds of errors.

Notes: Batch cultures of Trichoderma viride have been carried out in a 10 liter stirred fermenter at controlled pH values of 2.5, 2.7, 3.0, and 4.0, and without pH control at a temperature of 28°C. Cell and glucose concentrations and dissolved oxygen values are reported. The yield coefficient was found to be constant at 0.40 kg cells/kg glucose and the maximum specific growth rate was linearly correlated with the hydrogen ion concentration.

Description / Table of Contents: Acoustic Emission Signal Analysis.Application of acoustic emission analysis in practice is often limited by a high signal to noise ratio. The detection of the signals and the location of the AE-sources can be done only with low accuracy under these conditions. For this reason the use of calculation and analysing methods is being investigated enable differentiation of signal and background noise, as well as the determination of the sources of emission.

Description / Table of Contents: Non destructive testing of Narrow-Gap welded joints using radiographic and ultrasonic methods. The intensified demand for economical sources of electrical energy has led to nuclear power plants with increasingly larger pressure vessels, particularly for BWR and PWR installations. The wall thicknesses of these vessels now exceeds 200 mm. The fabrication of these heavy structural components to close construction tolerances has required the development of economic welding processes, which in general are fully mechanised. One such process which has been successfully applied to the joining of heavy sections is Narrow-Gap welding.Investigations on Narrow-Gap welded joints using conventional nondestructive testing methods, such as radiographic and ultrasonic methods, have revealed that weld defects in these weld seams can be readily determined since for this process, the possible zones of weld failures are clearly defined over a very small region. The assessment of the test results according to accepted standards for pressure vessel construction has revealed, that providing the welding conditions are carefully controlled, acceptable weld quality is ensured.

Notes: The hot corrosion behaviour of a number of nickel and cobalt-based superalloys has been examined by exposing samples to a high temperature oxidizing environment supersaturated with sodium sulphate vapour. This test seems more able to reproduce typical service behaviour than other laboratory tests.Pure cobalt is unaffected by the presence of the condensed sulphate, whereas CoW and low-chromium, CoCrW alloys undergo acidic fluxing. However, the major change produced by the continuous supply of Na2SO4, as opposed to the limited amount of salt available in the coating test is in the behaviour of the high chromium alloys, when the protective Cr2O3 layers are removed due to the formation of a Na2CrO4 species. Thus, the normally resistant Co25Cr7.5W alloy suffers acidic fluxing. Similarly, the Cr2O3 layer on the binary Co25Cr alloys is rendered ineffective; considerable ingress of sulphur into the alloy occurs. Aluminium and manganese additions seem to reduce this effect slightly by stabilising the protective oxide layer. Both these alloying additions have a higher affinity for sulphur than chromium, and this could be important.Binary Ni20Cr seems less susceptible to accelerated attack than the Co25Cr alloys, presumably due to its greater ability to maintain a protective Cr2O3 layer. However, addition of 3 vol.-% Y2O3 virtually prevents any attack by the Na2SO4, preventing sulphur penetration into the alloy and promoting the formation of a protective Cr2O3 layer.Under non-condensing conditions, all of the alloys tested oxidize in an unaccelerated manner, supporting the view that condensation of sodium sulphate is necessary for hot corrosion.
