Description / Table of Contents:
The thermal degradation reactions of poly(oxy-1,4-phenylene), poly(thio-1,4-phenylene), and were studied by direct pyrolysis in the ion source of the mass spectrometer. The use of a reduced ionization energy (15eV) allows to suppress the electron impact induced fragmentation reactions of the pyrolytic fragments and, thus, to ascertain the thermal degradation mechanisms. Characteristic differences in the thermal degradation behaviour and the fragment species formed in pyrolysis were found, in dependence on the bridging groups.By the example of Poly(dithio-1,4-phenylene), it could be shown that a temperature-programmed pyrolysis and the use of a data system for the acquisition of thermal ion chromatograms are appropriate to identify directly different polymer degradation reactions.
Notes:
