Notes: The suitability of hornblende as a support for immobilized β-fructofuranosidase (invertase) was studied, with regard to the physical stability of the support and the thermal and operational stability of the immobilized enzyme. Hornblende was more stable than Enzacryl-Alo or Enzacryl-TIO, and marginally more stable than porous glass. Invertase immobilized on hornblende was more stable during long-term operation than invertase immobilized on porous glass. An active preparation of immobilized invertase was obtained also on pyroxene particles.

Notes: Batch cultures of Trichoderma viride have been carried out in a 10 liter stirred fermenter at controlled pH values of 2.5, 2.7, 3.0, and 4.0, and without pH control at a temperature of 28°C. Cell and glucose concentrations and dissolved oxygen values are reported. The yield coefficient was found to be constant at 0.40 kg cells/kg glucose and the maximum specific growth rate was linearly correlated with the hydrogen ion concentration.

Description / Table of Contents: Gel permeation chromatography and thin layer chromatography have been used respectively to separate and characterize the first seven members of an epoxy resin polymer homologous series on a preparative and analytical scale. The epoxy resin was formed by the reaction between Bisphenol-A and epichlorhydrin. NMR was used to identify the oligomers. The relationship between extinction coefficient and degree of polymerisation was also determined.

Notes: A crosslinked polybutadiene containing a cyclic depsipeptide (Valinomycin) has been synthesized in which there is some possibility of threading to produce a catenated structure (polymeric catenane). Unthreaded rings were removed by extraction with toluene. An elemental analysis indicated the yield of threaded rings to be greater than the calculated expected yield. The total amount of threaded Valinomycin present was 0.37 percent. The rings showed no effect on the calorimetric glass transition temperature, but did result in an increase in the tensile modulus.

Notes: Polymer-impregnated concrete has proven to be a strong and environmentally resistant material with many potential uses. One such application is to impregnate the surface of highway bridge decks to improve their durability. This paper reports on various aspects of research directed toward the objective of developing a practical and economical process for surface treating bridge decks with liquid monomers which subsequently are polymerized. This work has included (1) selection and tailoring the monomer-initiator system, (2) development of application and curing systems, and (3) evaluation of the resulting treatments by many different testing procedures. Considerable progress has been made toward increasing the durability of concrete slabs as shown by laboratory and small-scale field tests and toward developing a practical method of application. Selected aspects of the fundamentals of surface treatments of highway bridge decks and details of the process and product as they have been developed to date will be presented here.

Notes: The characterization of eight fully aromatic polyamides are described with the procedures required to yield film- and fiber-forming materials. Solutions of these aromatic polyamides in dimethylacetamide were characterized by NMR and the effects of dissolved lithium chloride on these spectra investigated. The NMR resonances for specific protons in these polymers are assigned. The IR spectra of thin films and fibers of these polyamides are also reported, together with glass transition temperatures as measured by differential scanning calorimetry (DSC). The value of NMR and IR to identify specific polyamide homopolymers and copolymers is discussed.

Notes: The hydraulic permeation of toluene-cyclohexanone and isooctane-CCl4 mixtures through a membrane, a rubber network, was studied. No separation of components occurred in this mode. The mixture flux data were successfully analyzed using a solution-diffusion theory by treating the mixture as if it were a single component with properties of the mixture. Diffusion coefficients determined in this way appear to be governed by frictional forces having a hydrodynamic origin. Slight separation of the components did occur when the pervaporation mode of operation was used. The significance of this is discussed.

Notes: Computer fitting techniques have been used to derive a new expression for the relationship between X-ray continuum intensity and atomic number for a range of electron acelerating potentials up to 25 kV, continuum energies up to 10 keV and average atomic numbers up to thirty. A practical approach to background corrections in energy dispersive electron microprobe analysis, which utilizes this expression, is outlined. The procedure should lead to significant improvements in both accuracy and detection limits in this method of X-ray analysis.

Description / Table of Contents: Some routes for the preparation of macrozwitter ions without polar groups in the polymer chain are discussed. With 3-dimethylaminopropyllithium as initiator and 1,3-propanesultone (2) as terminating agent, bifunctional poly(α-methylstyrene)s 4 could be obtained with a tert. amino- and a lithium sulphonato end group (molecular weight range ≈ 103, bifunctionality 〉 90%). Both end groups were determined quantitatively, by elemental (N,S) and spectroscopic (IR and NMR) analyses as was done for the monofunctional model polymers.Although both end groups of the bifunctional polymers could be converted independently to the corresponding sulphonic acid group and the trimethyl ammonium iodide group, respectively, the macromitter ion 8 could not be obtained in the final reaction step: a rearrangement of the sulphonic acid 5 to the mitter ion 3 did unexpectedly not or scarcely occur, so that in the reaction with diazomethane the methyl sulphonate was preferentially formed instead of the betaine; in addition, an extensive loss of amino groups in the polymer was observed. With the poly(α-methyl styrene) 7 containing a quart, ammonium iodide and a lithium sulphonato end group, a degradation of the ammonium group was also found after the removal of the counter ions (I⊕ by Ag2O and Li⊕ by cation exchange).
