Notes: Abstract This paper considers near rings with d. c. c. on principalR-subgroups and a. c. c. on prinpipal annihilator right ideals. Many results concerning near rings on finite groups are then consequences of the above discussions.

Notes: Abstract The early phases of propagation of a large amplitude electromagnetic disturbance in a nonlinear dielectric slab embedded between two linear media are investigated by the method of characteristics. This disturbance is triggered by the arrival of an electromagnetic shock wave at one of the interfaces. Reflection and transmission of an arbitrary signal when it arrives at one of the slab boundaries is characterized in terms of nonlinear reflection and transmission coefficients for the interface. No restrictions are placed on the form of the constitutive laws of the material comprising the slab. By introducing, for the nonlinear dielectric, a class of model equations, an exact solution to the characteristic equations which describes the interaction of a centered wave with anarbitrary oncoming signal is obtained. Solutions for the electromagnetic fields are derived for the special case in which the incident disturbance interacts with the reflected signal from the slab interface. A particular case of the disturbance propagating across a nonmagnetic slab is also examined.

Notes: Abstract The exploration geochemist faces a serious problem in reconciling theoretical statistics with the empirical distribution of elements in materials in the earth's crust. The results of computer-simulation experiments being conducted by the Exploration Geochemistry Group at the University of New Brunswick illustrate some of the problems of the relation between frequency distributions and spatial distributions of elements and raise some interesting questions about sampling patterns and physical size of samples. Most importantly, the simulation experiments and empirical examples support the contention that attempts to make an assumption of normality more efficient by performing log transformations on positively skewed data may defeat the purpose of statistical analysis for exploration work. New developments in computer-data presentation and interpretation, including population sorting and classification, illustrate the increasing use of the computer in exploration geochemistry.

Notes: Abstract As is well known, a saddle point for the Lagrangian function, if it exists, provides a solution to a convex programming problem; then, the values of the optimal primal and dual objective functions are equal. However, these results are not valid for nonconvex problems. In this paper, several results are presented on the theory of the generalized Lagrangian function, extended from the classical Lagrangian and the generalized duality program. Theoretical results for convex problems also hold for nonconvex problems by extension of the Lagrangian function. The concept of supporting hypersurfaces is useful to add a geometric interpretation to computational algorithms. This provides a basis to develop a new algorithm.

Notes: Abstract A computationally stable method for the general solution of a system of linear equations is given. The system isA Tx−B=0, where then-vectorx is unknown and then×q matrixA and theq-vectorB are known. It is assumed that the matrixA T and the augmented matrix [A T,B] are of the same rankm, wherem≤n, so that the system is consistent and solvable. Whenm〈n, the method yields the minimum modulus solutionx m and a symmetricn ×n matrixH m of rankn−m, so thatx=x m+H my satisfies the system for ally, ann-vector. Whenm=n, the matrixH m reduces to zero andx m becomes the unique solution of the system. The method is also suitable for the solution of a determined system ofn linear equations. When then×n coefficient matrix is ill-conditioned, the method can produce a good solution, while the commonly used elimination method fails.

Notes: Abstract An efficient algorithm, based on Zoutendijk's feasible direction methods, is developed primarily for elastic minimum weight design of trusses subjected to stress, displacement, and cross-sectional constraints. In determining a stepsize in a usable feasible direction, an elaborate procedure is developed to gain as much weight reduction with as little computational effort as possible. A step can be taken to get more weight reduction only if the additional reduction estimated justifies the additional cost.
