Description / Table of Contents: 29Si-NMR Spectroscopy of Silicate Solutions. II. On the Dependence of the Structure of Silicate Anions in Water Solutions from the Na : Si RatioThe 29Si-FT-NMR spectra of 13 sodiumsilicate solutions with different Na:Si ratios are investigated with regard to the structure of the silicate anions in the solutions. The 5 typical building units (Monosilicate, end-, middle-, branching and crosslinking groups) show characteristic and non overlapping ranges of the 29Si chemical shift with many signals splittings caused by different neighbouring group effects. The relative intensities of the signals give informations on the concentrations and the equilibrium of condensation of the silicate anions in dependence of the Na:Si ratio. It is shown, that many types of anions with different degree of condensation coexist in an equilibrium, which is shiftet to the polymer silicate anions with high content of branching and crosslinking groups on the decrease of the Na:Si ratio.

Description: A pilot model is described which accounts for the effect of motion cues in a well defined visual tracking task. The effect of visual and motion cues are accounted for in the model in two ways. First, the observation matrix in the pilot model is structured to account for the visual and motion inputs presented to the pilot. Secondly, the weightings in the quadratic cost function associated with the pilot model are modified to account for the pilot's perception of the variables he considers important in the task. Analytic results obtained using the pilot model are compared to experimental results and in general good agreement is demonstrated. The analytic model yields small improvements in tracking performance with the addition of motion cues for easily controlled task dynamics and large improvements in tracking performance with the addition of motion cues for difficult task dynamics.

Description: This modelization starts from the following hypotheses: pilot's behavior is a time discrete process, he can perform only one task at a time and his operating mode depends on the considered flight subphase. Pilot's behavior was observed using an electro oculometer and a simulator cockpit. A FORTRAN program has been elaborated using two strategies. The first one is a Markovian process in which the successive instrument readings are governed by a matrix of conditional probabilities. In the second one, strategy is an heuristic process and the concepts of mental load and performance are described. The results of the two aspects have been compared with simulation data.

Description: The control of active articulated mechanisms involves the construction of trajectories and corresponding forces (torques). Two procedures for developing mathematical models of manipulator dynamics are explored. The control task can be formulated as follows: define the dynamic control parameters of the basic manipulator configuration with three degrees of freedom, which should perform movements at N points of the working space. The task can be solved by forming programmed coordinated motion which have to realize the adopted tip trajectory.

Description: A maneuver complex and related performance measures used to evaluate driver/vehicle system responses as effected by variations in the directional response characteristics of passenger cars are described. The complex consists of normal and emergency maneuvers (including random and discrete disturbances) which, taken as a whole, represent all classes of steering functions and all modes of driver response behavior. Measures of driver/vehicle system response and performance in regulation tasks included direct describing function measurements and rms yaw velocity. In transient maneuvers, measures such as steering activity and cone strikes were used.

Description: A passive system to determine the in-flight intake of nutrients is developed. Nonabsorbed markers placed in all foods in proportion to the nutrients selected for study are analyzed by neutron activation analysis. Fecal analysis for each market indicates how much of the nutrients were eaten and apparent digestibility. Results of feasibility tests in rats, mice, and monkeys indicate the diurnal variation of several markers, the transit time for markers in the alimentary tract, the recovery of several markers, and satisfactory use of selected markers to provide indirect measurement of apparent digestibility. Recommendations are provided for human feasibility studies.

Description: On the Apollo and Skylab missions the high-energy heavy ion (HZE) flux was measured by means of plastic nuclear track detectors. Measurements involved the fluxes of high linear energy transfer (LET), particles with Z between 6 and 26 incident on astronauts and on several biological experiments. Partial results of these measurements are presented; the effects of shielding and solar modulation are discussed.-

Description: A one dimensional compensatory tracking task and a digit processing reaction time task were combined in a three phase experiment designed to investigate tracking performance in time sharing. Adaptive techniques, elaborate feedback devices, and on line standardization procedures were used to adjust task difficulty to the ability of each individual subject and manipulate time sharing demands. Feedback control analysis techniques were employed in the description of tracking performance. The experimental results show that when the dynamics of a system are constrained, in such a manner that man machine system stability is no longer a major concern of the operator, he tends to adopt a first order control describing function, even with tracking systems of higher order. Attention diversion to a concurrent task leads to an increase in remnant level, or nonlinear power. This decrease in linearity is reflected both in the output magnitude spectra of the subjects, and in the linear fit of the amplitude ratio functions.

Description: The paper discusses the estimation of the degree of atherosclerosis in the human femoral artery through the use of a digital image processing system for vascular angiograms. The film digitizer uses an electronic image dissector camera to scan the angiogram and convert the recorded optical density information into a numerical format. Another processing step involves locating the vessel edges from the digital image. The computer has been programmed to estimate vessel abnormality through a series of measurements, some derived primarily from the vessel edge information and others from optical density variations within the lumen shadow. These measurements are combined into an atherosclerosis index, which is found in a post-mortem study to correlate well with both visual and chemical estimates of atherosclerotic disease.
