    Description: The contribution of the Goddard Space Flight Center to the National Geodetic Satellite Program is reported. All of the major types of tracking systems, including those employing optical, electronic, range-and-range-rate, and laser technologies, which were developed and operated by Goddard, are described. The MINITRACK data were used to derive geodetic results. The methods used for the analysis of these data are presented.

    Description: A balloon flight was conducted with a sensitive infrared spectral radiometer system in support of the LACATE balloon experiment. The instrumentation aboard the balloon is described along with data reduction techniques. Results obtained during the flight are presented.

    Description: The sensitometry and film calibration effort for the Skylab/ATM S-056 X-ray telescope is summarized. The apparatus and procedures used are described together with the two types of flight film used, Kodak SO-212 and SO-242. The sensitometry and processing of the flight film are discussed, and the results are presented in the form of the characteristic curves and related data. The use of copy films is also discussed.

    Description: A refinement has been obtained in the earth's gravitational field by using satellite and surface data. In addition to a more complete treatment of data previously employed on 27 satellites, the new satellite solution Gem 7 (Goddard Earth Model 7) includes 64,000 laser measurements taken on seven satellites. Gem 7, containing 400 harmonic terms, is complete through degree and order 16. The companion solution Gem 8 combines the same satellite data as Gem 7 with surface gravimetry over 39% of the earth. Gem 8 is complete to degree and order 25. Extensive tests on data independent of the solution show that the undulations of the geoidal surface computed by Gem 7 have an accuracy of about 2.5 m (rms). The overall accuracy of the geoid calculated by Gem 8 is estimated to be about 4 m (rms). The new combination solution is the first to show signs of 'convection rolls' in the upper mantle below the Pacific Ocean.

    Description: Aperture synthesis observations at 2.695 GHz and 8.085 GHz of the H II regions NRAO 591, NGC 6857, NGC 7538, M8, W3 and W49A made with the NRAO interferometer are presented. A set of Gaussian functions is derived to describe the radiation distribution of each H II region at each frequency. Fine structure is found in all regions. With the exception of the extended source in W49A, all previously known sources with high excitation parameters are resolved into smaller sources. The electron densities of individual sources range from 100 per cu cm up to 100,000 per cu cm. In NGC 6857, NGC 7538 and W49A, continuum sources smaller than 4 arc sec and with electron densities exceeding 10,000 per cu cm are found close to the known class II OH emission sources. In M8, we find a ring which seems to be split at the position of the O-star Herschel 36.

    Description: An eclipsing X-ray binary pulsator consistent with the location of A1540-53 has been observed. The source pulse period was 528.93 + or - 0.10 s. The binary nature is confirmed by a Doppler curve for the pulsation period. The eclipse angle of 30.5 + or - 3 deg and the 4-hour transition to and from eclipse suggest an early-type giant or supergiant primary star.

    Description: Observations from five separate experiments on the Isis 2 spacecraft are used to study the atmosphere/ionosphere during the magnetic storm of December 16-20, 1971. The data are most complete in the midlatitude region, permitting a study of the SAR arc (subauroral red arc) which developed during the night of December 17-18. Ion composition and temperature, electron temperature, electron-density height profiles from the spacecraft to the F region, and the intensity of the 6300-A oxygen emission are all presented for the region of interest. It is found that the H(+) concentration had sharp gradients near the SAR arc and that the plasma temperature was significantly enhanced over typical nighttime values, reaching nearly 7000 K at 1400 km on the field line which intersected the arc. A system of time-dependent equations for atmospheric/ionospheric composition and temperature is solved using boundary conditions which were selected so that the solutions are in agreement with the observations. From these solutions, an assessment is made of the influence of (1) the efflux of plasma from the ionosphere to the magnetosphere, (2) the decrease in O/N2 at the turbopause, (3) the increase in the loss coefficient as a result of an increase in the vibrational temperature of N2, and (4) the conduction of thermal energy into the ionosphere.

    Description: Experimental observations from a variety of sources made during a substorm period near 0900 UT on January 2, 1971 have provided evidence confirming mid-latitude and subauroral phenomena associated with magnetic substorm activity. A review of these observations, including ground and balloon observations made near L=4 at the conjugate stations Siple, Antarctica and Roberval, Canada and data obtained from the synchronous-orbit satellite ATS 5 positioned about 2 hours west of the Siple, Roberval meridian, is presented. During the hour before the reported correlated bursts of X rays and VLF noise (Rosenberg et al., 1971), the plasmapause appears to be displaced towards the equator from Siple; resonance conditions along the field lines at Siple were favorable for the observation of results of magnetospheric wave-particle interactions involving electrons with energies exceeding 30 keV. The correlated observations are a potential source of information concerning the relationship of ULF and VHF noise activity to the magnetospheric particle population at middle latitudes; the injection and subsequent drift of low and medium energy electrons during substorms; and enhanced particle precipitation deep within the plasmasphere during substorms.

    Description: A rapid reconfiguration of the dusk side magnetosphere was observed near the magnetic equator by particle and field experiments aboard Explorer 45 at 1715 UT on June 17, 1972. Following the onset of an 800-gamma negative bay in the auroral zone, Explorer 45, inbound at 1700 MLT and L about 5, observed a sharp dropout of outer zone electrons. Simultaneously, the plasma density dropped from a level typical of the plasmasphere to one typical of the ion trough, and plasma sheet proton fluxes increased, producing a 100-gamma depression in B, in a shift to a taillike configuration. Outer zone electrons with pitch angles near 45 deg returned with delay times consistent with injection near midnight at the time of dropout and eastward drift to the dusk meridian. Approximately 45 min after the reconfiguration, the satellite reentered the plasmasphere, and the electron fluxes returned to previous levels. In the next orbit, approximately 6 hours later, a region of isolated plasma was detected near apogee at 1400 MLT. There is therefore circumstantial evidence that the type of magnetospheric reconfiguration observed here is responsible for the detachment of regions of cold plasma from the plasmasphere.
