    Description: Research on the primary cosmic radiation and solar cosmic rays from the Luna 10, 11, and 12 artificial lunar satellites is reviewed. Data on the vertical distribution of cosmic rays above the moon's surface are presented, and the albedo for the primary radiation is determined. The fluxes of electrons with energies from 30 to 300 keV were registered in the solar cosmic rays. Rapid variations of the electron flux were observed. The angular distributions of 0.5-10 MeV protons moving together with the corpuscular streams responsible for Forbush decreases were investigated.

    Description: The successful hot fire demonstration of a pulsing liquid hydrogen/liquid oxygen and gaseous hydrogen/liquid oxygen attitude control propulsion system thruster is described. The test was the result of research to develop a simple, lightweight, and high performance reaction control system without the traditional requirements for extensive periods of engine thermal conditioning, or the use of complex equipment to convert both liquid propellants to gas prior to delivery to the engine. Significant departures from conventional injector design practice were employed to achieve an operable design. The work discussed includes thermal and injector manifold priming analyses, subscale injector chilldown tests, and 168 full scale and 550 N (1250 lbF) rocket engine tests. Ignition experiments, at propellant temperatures ranging from cryogenic to ambient, led to the generation of a universal spark ignition system which can reliably ignite an engine when supplied with liquid, two phase, or gaseous propellants. Electrical power requirements for spark igniter are very low.

    Description: The problem of small perturbation potential supersonic flow around complex configurations is considered. This problem requires the solution of an integral equation relating the values of the potential on the surface of the body to the values of the normal derivative, which is known from the small perturbation boundary conditions. The surface of the body is divided into small (hyperboloidal quadrilateral) surface elements, sigma sub i, which are described in terms of the Cartesian components of the four corner points. The values of the potential (and its normal derivative) within each element is assumed to be constant and equal to its value at the centroid of the element, and this yields a set of linear algebraic equations. The coefficients of the equation are given by source and doublet integrals over the surface elements, sigma sub i. The results obtained using the above formulation are compared with existing analytical and experimental results.

    Description: The test articles investigated include two full-scale radiator/condenser panels and a system of three parallel-connected fused quartz tubes. Testing was performed initially on the ground, with both horizontal and inclined flow passage orientations, and additionally in an aircraft flying 0-g trajectories. The photographic observations were made with two high speed cameras and a low speed camera. The flow regimes observed are compared with those predicted by the Baker chart (1954). The Baker chart is well in accord with physical reality in the annular flow region. However, a stratified-annular flow regime observed has no counterpart in the Baker categorization.

    Description: A summary is presented of an acoustic test program for investigating engine noise suppression and jet/flap interaction noise associated with an EBF STOL powered lift system. A highly suppressed TF-34 engine and EBF wing were used in the investigation. The engine was suppressed 21 PndB to a level of 94 PndB. An UTW powered lift system was tested with conventional, mixer, and decayer-type nozzles. The configuration with velocity decayer nozzle and acoustically treated shroud had the lowest noise (98 PndB). An OTW configuration with non-decayer nozzle was about 10 db quieter than the corresponding UTW system. UTW and OTW noise data are compared with scale model correlations.

    Description: Time-lapsed photography of the liquid/solid interface of a melting ice cylinder was taken on Skylab 3 over a period of three hours. The same experiment was simulated on earth such that morphological and thermodynamic differences could be noted. A study of the returned color film clearly shows the dominance of surface tension effects in low-gravity melting. In the Skylab experiment, the ends of the ice cylinder melted first with the water being driven by surface tension onto the cylindrical surfaces. At any time, the principle of minimum surface area governs the overall appearance of the water-ice globule which changed from a cylindrical to a spherical shape. The latent heat of melting in low-gravity is supplied only by radiation (81%) and conduction (19%); whereas in one-g, the convective (55%) and radiative (38%) mode of heat transfer dominates over the conductive portion (7%). Information is also provided on containerless melting and heat transfer in space in the absence of convective air currents.

    Description: The stability of three different dispersions of oil and water prepared on Skylab 4 is compared with the same dispersions made on earth. The stability of the emulsions has been studied by two independent optical techniques. An analysis of the data indicates that all the investigated emulsions were stable over a period of 10 hr, whereas the fluids separated completely on earth in 10 sec. This experiment indicates that the rate of coalescence in low gravity is at least 3 millionths times that on earth. A knowledge of the coalescence rate in low gravity is important in the solidification of immiscible alloys in space. The parameters obtained for this experiment are compared with those of liquid metals to determine if the same stability could be achieved with immiscible alloys.
