Summary Brassica tournefortii Gouan, a 2n=20-chromosome species and carrier of the D genome occurs as a weed. Meiosis was studied in haploids obtained by parthenogenesis in the progeny of B. tournefortii x B. nigra. Occurrence of 1 III+2II+3I indicated the presence of six basic types of chromosomes. Consequently an aneuploid origin for B. tournefortii with x=6 suggested. Further evidence was gained by observing six groups of secondarily associated bivalents in the diploid. It was further suggested that B. tournefortii and B. campestris, also a 2n=20-chromosome species, evolved from a common prototype with x=6 in the Mediterranean region.
