Description / Table of Contents: Zusammenfassung Enzymhistochemisch ist der Syncytiotrophoblast an der Oberfläche reifer menschlicher Placentazotten in verschiedene ineinander übergehende Abschnitte gegliedert.
Notes: Summary At the surface of mature human placental villi, the syncytotrophoblast is, in terms of enzyme-histochemistry, arranged in different intertwining sections. Taking into account light and electron microscopical findings as well as embryological and biochemical data, one can differ the following: 1. Thin epithelial plates with high G6P, HK and βGl activity. Processes of passive diffusion and the most intensive glucose transport appear to take place here. 2. Thick epithelial plates containing in addition aP, ATPase and 5Nase, enzymes indicating energy-consuming substance exchange. 3. Thicker syncytium devoid of nucleus with high activity of sP, LAP, GDH and αGPDH. Resorption with processes of decomposition and alteration seem to overweight here. 4. Syncytium with nucleus additionally showing high activity of Krebs cycle dehydro-genases. They enable energy-consuming synthetical and secretory processes. 5. Syncytial and proliferation sprouts with strongest HK, G6PDH, LDH and citrate-cycle enzyme activity. They are though to be the main center of energy, RNA and HCG production. 6. Sections of syncytium with smooth endoplasmic reticulum and tubular mitochondria showing distinct activity of 3βOHDH and 17βOHDH which indicate intensive estrogen and progesterone metabolism. 7. Syncytium layers above Langhans cells with high 17βOHDH activity. Together with the neighbouring epithelial plates, they could be the point of estriol synthesis.

Notes: Summary Previous electroretinographic (ERG) studies of white-eyed and red-eyed (wild-type)Drosophila melanogaster (Stark and Wasserman, 1972a) yielded results that were in agreement with Goldsmith's (1965) hypothesis that eye-color pigment absorption decreases the recruitment of contributions from peripheral ommatidia into the ERG. These screening pigments therefore produce wavelength-specific differences between these two strains (as well as within the red-eyed strain) in three ERG parameters, namely the magnitudes of the on- and off-transients and the slopes of the receptor potential energy-response functions. In the present study these three ERG parameters were each measured for constant receptor potential magnitudes (to remove the contribution of spectral sensitivityper se) at 13 wavelengths from 350 nm to 650 nm in the following strains:cn (having only pterins),bw (having only ommatins), wild (having both pigment classes), and two white-eyed strains,cn bw andw. Multiple linear regression analyses were carried out in order to determine the relationships between the foregoing three ERG parameters and parameters related to spectral sensitivity. These data lead us to the following conclusions: 1. Unexpected wavelength-dependent parameter differences exist in white-eyed flies. The slopes of the energy-response functions and the magnitudes of the transients all systematically vary and all correlate highly with the spectral sensitivity and with each other. This result implicates another spectrally selective factor other than pigment-determined recruitment in the ERG ofDrosophila. Several hypotheses about the nature of this factor are discussed. 2. Parameter differences attributable strictly to eye-color pigments were found when wild,cn, andbw strains were compared with white-eyed strains. These parameter differences varied linearly with screening pigment density, and multiple linear regression analyses accurately predicted the differences in spectral sensitivity produced by the eye-color pigments from the parameter differences of transient sizes and energy-response function slopes.

Notes: Abstract A detailed analysis is presented of the large-amplitude temperature-insensitive oscillations in the transverse magnetoresistivity of ultrapure Mg single crystals resulting from the direct interference of electron quantum states. A calculation of the relative harmonic content of these interference signals based on the transmission characteristics of a magnetic breakdown-generated interferometer is used to quantitatively study certain aspects of the electron states in Mg as well as details of magnetic breakdown. In particular, values of magnetic breakdown parametersH 0are determined without invoking the complexities of transport theory. An absolute lower limit for the electron quantum state lifetime of τ ≳ 0.5 nsec is obtained (forT=1.5° K), although a best fit to the data gives a value an order of magnitude larger, τ∼5 nsec, which corresponds to quantum phase coherence extending over a distance of 3 mm in these crystals. In addition, this work provides direct experimental verification of the π/2 phase difference between transmitted and reflected electron states at a magnetic breakdown junction. Comparison of the results of this experiment with previous work via an existing semiempirical band structure calculation demonstrates the complete consistency of these measurements with previous Fermi surface data.

Notes: Abstract The virtual crystal approximation is used to formulate the Schrödinger equation for the electronic band structure of a dilute substitutional alloy and to analyze the effect of coherent scattering on the lifetime τ k of an electron quantum state. Both coherent and incoherent scattering theory yield essentially the same functional and numerical relationship connecting τ k ,C, and |V O|, whereC is the impurity concentration and |V O| is the typical Fourier transform of the impurity perturbation potential. Electron quantum interference data for Mg-Zn and Mg-Cd alloys are interpreted using this formulation. A consistent picture of these alloys results which contains the following features. (1) The impurity atoms in both types of alloys are partially ordered in the Mg lattice. (2) The perturbation potentials for both Zn and Cd are somewhat larger than predicted by simple pseudopotential theories, with the perturbation for Zn being about 6.5 times larger than for Cd. (3) A standing charge density wave commensurate with the lattice and having aC-dependent amplitude is present in these alloys.
