Notes: Lea fage influences the level of activity and the decay rate of the enzymes nitrate reductase (NR: E.C. 1.6.6.1) and glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase (G6PD; E.C. 1.1.1.49) extracted with and without protein in the extraction media. Such influence was determined in three plant species: corn (Zea mays L.), oats (Arena sativa L.), and tobacco (Nicotiana tabacum L.). Leaves of different ages were obtained from plants of various ages, or by removal of leaf blades from different positions on a single shoot. NR activity (per g fresh weight) declined as leaves of these plant species became older, especially when extraction was effected with conventional media (i.e. without added protein). The instability of NR in these extracts increased as leaves became older. Decay of NR in vitro was exponential with time. Addition of protein [3 %(w/v) casein or bovine serum albumin] to extraction media markedly increased the level of NR activity and its stability, especially in older leaves of all three plant species. Addition of protein did not affect the level of G6PD extracted from corn leaf blades, but slightly enhanced its activity in extracts from the oldest leaf blade of oats. G6PD activity also declined as leaf blades of corn and oats became older.

Notes: Abstract To determine the potential pathogenicity ofAlternaria alternata, we exposed rabbits and guinea pigs to the organism by intradermal and intraperitoneal injection and by scarification. It caused superficial mycosis when inoculated by scarification. An antigenic extract of it that we prepared and used in ring precipitation tests demonstrated precipitating antibodies in the experimentally infected animals.

Notes: Abstract The Ca/P molar ratio, % CO 3 2− , and % HPO 4 2− was determined for a number of apatites prepared by the hydrolysis of amorphous calcium phosphate in the presence of solution carbonate. The Ca/P molar ratio for each apatite was significantly higher than for the corresponding amorphous precursor. The change in carbonate content was slight but the HPO 4 2− level in these apatites, as determined by the standard pyrolytic technique, was greatly reduced, sometimes to a near zero value. Infrared analysis, on the other hand, clearly showed an appreciable level of HPO 4 2− . Evidence obtained indicated that the carbonate interferes with the pyrolytic assay for HPO 4 2− by either blocking condensation to P2O 7 4− or by breaking down already formed P2O 7 4− . It is suggested that the pyrolytic method be used with great caution in assaying for HPO 4 2− in calcified tissue.

Notes: Conclusions 1. The results of the radiation measurements confirmed the main design values of the levels of radiation. 2. Estimates of the activity of the sodium based on direct measurements and measurements of the dose rates of γ radiation on the surface of the pipelines were in satisfactory agreement with calculated data; the value of the activity extrapolated to the nominal reactor power equals ∼16 Ci/liter. 3. The efficiency of the shielding around the passages of the pipelines in the first circuit was quite satisfactory; it is expected that the neutron flux in the boxes at nominal power will be considerably below the design value. 4. The results of our measurements of neutron and γ radiation fluxes at a power of ∼150 kW on the outer surfaces of the reactor and the boxes of the first circuit show that no defects occur in the shielding, apart from individual local defects associated with the assembly of the system. 5. The level of irradiation endured by personnel when working on the extraction of the measuring packs and the preparation of the ampoules containing the indicators was no greater than the permitted daily dose. 6. The foregoing measurements are only part of a general program of investigations into the radiation conditions of the BN-350 reactor. The next stages will be enacted after the reactor has passed into power production and been used for a considerable period.

Notes: Abstract A study is made of the possibility of confining a thermonuclear plasma with temperature T ∼ 104 eV and density n ∼ 1018 cm-3, not by magnetic field pressure, but by hard walls of a chamber (nonmagnetic containment). This method of plasma containment has some specific features: the occurrence of plasma flow, formation of a dense layer at the wall, increased importance of radiative losses from the plasma, and more. A numerical solution of the plasma-transport equations is used to investigate the influence of these features on the energy lifetime of the plasma. The results indicate that the additional energy losses by the plasma are not catastrophically large, and, in principle, nonmagnetic containment of a dense plasma is possible.
