Notes: Solid state processing of polyethylene (SS60-050) by hydrostatic extrusion is investigated. Measurements are also reported for the tensile properties of polyethylene 60-050 under superposed hydrostatic pressure. With the latter data an estimate is made of the pressure required for extrusion of polyethylene in the absence of losses due to friction and redundant work. The limiting conditions for successful extrusion are discussed.

Description: The input parameters are presented for a computer program which performs calculations for inviscid isentropic transonic flow over three dimensional airfoils with straight leading edges. The free stream Mach number is restricted only by the isentropic assumption. Weak shock waves are automatically located where they occur in the flow. The finite difference form of the full equation for the velocity potential is solved by the method of relaxation, after the flow exterior to the airfoil is mapped to the upper half plane.

Description: A complete numerical solution is obtained for plane wave propagation in a variable-area duct which carries a mean compressible flow. The equation solved is a matrix formulation of the equations first derived by Tsien in 1952. Sample calculations are presented for four particular flow configurations: (1) a duct-nozzle-duct combination with the acoustic wave traveling with the flow, (2) a duct-nozzle-duct combination with the acoustic wave traveling against the flow, (3) an inlet-nozzle-duct configuration with the acoustic wave traveling against the flow, and (4) a duct-nozzle-exit configuration with the acoustic wave traveling with the flow. For each of these cases, the variation of energy flux with frequency is shown for particular geometry and flow condition.

Description: A series of large scale wind tunnel experiments were conducted on a gimbal mounted Cassegrainian telescope enclosed in a shroud with various aerodynamic fairings. The optical aperture was open to the airstream, resulting in acoustic inputs to the telescope. Resonance was shown to be dependent on free stream Mach number, internal cavity and external fairing geometry, and the angle of the plane of the opening relative to the free stream direction. Configurations were found which caused low noise and low unsteady internal loads at the expense of decreased view angle. Air injection over the cavity aided in reducing acoustic resonance.

Description: A solution is obtained for the noise induced by vortex shedding from the trailing edge of a semiinfinite flat plate. The method of solution for the potential flow is based on a procedure whereby an inner incompressible flow is matched to an outer acoustic field. Acoustic wave fronts are calculated and compared qualitatively with schlieren photographs of similar flows. The acoustic directivity pattern is obtained, and the extreme sensitivity of this parameter to the incompressible flow near the trailing edge of the plate is investigated.
