Notes: [Auszug] The advent of detailed studies on the evolution of individual molecules has cast into doubt some of the neo-Darwinian concepts of what determines evolutionary change. Much more emphasis must now be placed on the constraints imposed by the structural and functional requirements of protein molecules, ...

Notes: Abstract Under discriminatory pricing, the firm's marginal revenue is equated with its marginal cost at each market point in the space economy. This pricing practice is more profitable than the f. o.b. pricing schedule which involves equality of aggregate marginal revenue and marginal cost. From this departure point, the present paper determines the effect on the theory of spatial price discrimination of homogeneous and heterogeneous local demand schedules and different degrees of competition over economic space. By relaxing the customary assumptions of homogeneity and assuming varying levels of competition, better explanations of spatial pricing policies obtain. A case study is also presented to indicate the importance of the alternative assumptions made in spatial price discriminating theory. It is shown that different demand schedules and varying levels of competition tend to promote discriminatory prices over economic space.

Notes: Abstract Isotope effects in the two-mode operation of a 633 nm He-Ne laser are investigated with due allowance for soft collisions. A theory is developed for the power of and beat frequency between two modes as a function of cavity detuning with and without soft collisions. Experiments were performed with Ne20∶Ne22 isotope ratios of 98∶2, 95∶5 and 91∶9. The experimental data fit the theoretical curves which include the effects of soft collisions qualitatively for the mode intensities and quantitatively for the beat frequency provided the total cavity loss is assumed to be 3.5%. The output power of the 98∶2 tube with 1.1 Torr of helium is symmetrical about line centre; the power of the 95∶5 tube shows an asymmetry opposite to that of a single isotope tube. The lower frequency mode oscillates in a narrower region in the case of natural neon than for a 95∶5 mixture.

Notes: Abstract The effect of the reduction in mean free path on the anisotropy of the upper critical fieldH c2 has been studied in Nb by adding Ta and Mo as impurities. It is found that impurities suppress the degree of anisotropy, in qualitative accord with the theory of Hohenberg and Werthamer, which shows that in cubic materials with a nonspherical Fermi surface anisotropy arises from nonlocal corrections to the GLAG theory. The results were analyzed by fitting the observed anisotropy curves to an expansion in Kubic harmonics. It is found that the second harmonic coefficientA 2, which depends on first nonlocal corrections, decreases initially with addition of Ta or Mo according to theory, but tends to level off to an approximately constant value in the dirty limit, where it should vanish. The value of the third harmonic coefficientA 3, which depends on higher-order nonlocal terms, vanishes rapidly with the addition of impurity, the rate of decrease being more rapid for Mo. It is also found that the presence of an impurity does not affect the temperature dependence ofA 2 for both Nb-Ta and Nb-Mo systems andA 3 for the Nb-Ta system and has an approximately similar effect as for pure Nb.

Notes: Abstract Some behavior ofSergestes lucens by day was observed by underwater camera with an electronic flash. A number of species was snapped at about 2–60 m above the steep continental slope where the bottom ranged between 341 and 437 m depths. They were often abundant from 3–4 to 10 m above the bottom. It suggests that the shrimps scatter widely along the continental slope by day. The maximum concentration of the shrimp was 1.2 individuals/m3. None of the shrimps was found on the bottom, and the majority were swimming in horizontal position.
