Notizen: Abstract A coupled iteration scheme for approximating the solution of nonlinear boundary value problems framed in the context of alternative problems (i.e. auxiliary equation and bifurcation equation) is discussed. Under suitable hypotheses, convergence of the scheme proves existence of a solution, and in some cases the convergence to the bifurcation point is accelerated.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Zusammenfassung Eine familiär vorkommende partielle Trisomie für das distale Ende des langen Armes von Chromosom 8 sowie für den kurzen Arm und die Zentromer-Region des Chromosomes 22 wird mitgeteilt. Obwohl das betroffene Segment des Chromosom 8 klein ist, stimmen die Befunde bei den betroffenen Patienten mit der allgemeinen Beschreibung des Trisomie 8-Syndromes überein. Dadurch wird nahegelegt, daß das distale Ende des langen Armes von Chromosom 8 für die wesentlichen Aspekte des Trisomie 8-Phänotyps verantwortlich sein könnte.

Notizen: Summary A familial partial trisomy for the distal end of the long arm of chromosome 8 and the short arm and centromeric region of chromosome 22 is reported. Even though the segment of chromosome 8 involved is small, the findings in the affected patients fit the general description of the trisomy-8 syndrome. This suggests that the distal end of the long arm of chromosome 8 may be responsible for the bulk of the trisomy-8 phenotype.

Beschreibung / Inhaltsverzeichnis: Zusammenfassung Bei einer normalen Frau, die ein Kind mit partieller Trisomie des kurzen Armes des Chromosoms 11 und eine balancierte Translokation 12/13 hatte, wurde ein kompliziertes strukturelles Rearrangement der Chromosomen 11, 12 und 13 gefunden. Eine detaillierte Analyse der Chromosomen nach Darstellung der G-Banden aus frühen Metaphasen erlaubte die Abgrenzung neuer Chromosomenbanden, die sich ihrerseits als notwendig für die Analyse dieses seltenen Phänomens erwiesen.

Notizen: Summary A complex structural rearrangement of chromosomes 11, 12 and 13 was found in a normal female who gave birth to an affected child with partial trisomy for the short arm of chromosome 11 and a balanced translocation 12/13. The detailed analysis of the G-banded chromosomes from early metaphases permitted the delineation of new chromosomal bands which in turn proved essential to the identification of this unusual phenomenon.

Notizen: Abstract The relationship between chromosomal bands and repetitious DNA has been investigated by means of the quinacrine fluorescence technique and in situ hybridization with c-RNA to different fractions of repetitive DNA. A comparison of the Q bands with the labelling patterns obtained showed a preferential distribution of repetitive DNA's at Cot's ranging from 0 to 5 in those regions that are Q band positive. A distinct labelling was also observed in the pericentromeric regions and in some telomeres. It is suggested that the distribution of repetitive DNA along the chromosomes plays an important role in band formation.

Notizen: Summary Streptomycin high resistant and dependent mutants of E. coli K12 were isolated and characterized with regard to a) permissiveness for phenotypic suppression by streptomycin of the conditional streptomycin-dependent mutation thr-1, and b) restriction of the activity of the sup-59 amber suppressor. The majority of the streptomycin-resistant the strA mutation. Streptomycin-dependent (SmHD) mutants were grouped into three main classes, SmD Et− PmS, SmD EtD PmS and SmD EtD PmD or DrugD, according to their ability to allow paromomycin or ethanol to act as substitutes for streptomycin for growth. In addition, streptomycin-dependent mutants were classified as either permissive (Per+) or nonpermissive (Per−) with regard to the streptomycin-mediated phenotypic suppression of the thr-1 mutation and of two T4 amber mutations. This behavior was shown to be due to different allelic states of another gene, strM. Mutations at strM were responsible for the Per− phenotype in SmHD strains. In streptomycin-sensitive or-resistant bacteria, strM remained largely unexpressed. strM was located at approximately min 68 of the standard E. coli map. In strM heterozygous merodiploids, the wild-type Per+ phenotype was dominant over Per−. The nature of the strM product remains unknown. Restriction of sup-59 activity by streptomycin resistant and dependent mutations was infrequent, and was not correlated with the mutant's behavior in phenotypic suppression. Although strM-mediated phenotypic suppression counteracted the restriction imposed by strA mutations, apparently it did not act by restoring the activity of genetic suppressors.

Notizen: Summary Iron supply influences the amount of manganese absorbed by plants. When it is low, increased manganese uptake and translocation occurs. However, with excessive iron supply an increase in manganese uptake results, but not in its translocation. Manganese uptake is diminished under conditions of very low iron availability.

Notizen: Abstract The thermal conductivity in bulk samples of pure Zn and the Kondo alloy Zn-Mn have been measured in the temperature range 0.360 to about 1.0 K for concentrations 2.7, 6.0, 8.4, 10.0, and 11.7 ppm Mn. Our results for the depression of the superconducting to normal state transition temperature (T c) with Mn concentration and for the temperature dependence of the thermal conductivity of pure Zn agree with the results obtained by other workers. The ratio of the thermal conductances in the superconducting and normal states has been quantitatively compared with the Bardeen-Rickayzen-Tewordt and Ambegaokar-Griffin theories. We found agreement between the Ambegaokar-Griffin theory and experiment at all temperatures for Mn concentrations lower than 10.0 ppm and discrepancy between theory and experiment in the 10.0 ppm and 11.7-ppm samples. In the latter specimens the measured conductance ratio was greater than the theoretical predictions. For these two samplesT c occurs at about the temperature where ordering (impurity-impurity interactions) is observed in the normal state. We have analyzed our measurements using those solutions of the Kondo problem in superconductors dealing mainly with the existence of bound states in the energy gap, as well as available theories on the effects of impurity-impurity interactions. We have concluded that our results can be qualitatively understood using the ideas of Fowler and Maki and of Zittartz and Müller-Hartmann which give a bound state in the energy gap. It appears that the growth of the impurity band and spin ordering (impurity-impurity interactions) are intrinsically related.
