Description: A model is suggested for Io's surface composition involving evaporite salt deposits, rich in sodium and sulfur. According to this model, these deposits were produced as a result of the migration of salt-saturated aqueous solutions to Io's surface from a warm or hot interior followed by loss of the water to space. This model satisfies cosmochemical constraints based on Io's initial composition, current density, and thermal history. Salt-rich assemblages are easily derivable from the leaching of carbonaceous chondritic material. The chemical and optical properties of such deposits, after modification by irradiation, can be used to explain Io's overall albedo and spectral reflectance, its dark reddish poles, and the observed sodium emission as well as or better than other currently suggested materials.

Description: Consideration of the problem of characterizing optimal controls for a class of distributed parameter systems. The system dynamics are characterized mathematically by a finite number of coupled partial differential equations involving first-order time and space derivatives of the state variables. Boundary conditions on the state are in the form of a finite number of algebraic relations between the state and boundary control variables. A few directions are outlined in which the results obtained may be extended further.

Description: Theoretical and mathematical considerations involved in the design of retroreflectors for the GEOS-C and Timation III laser ranging satellites are described, laser ranging systems used by the Goddard Space Flight Center are reviewed, and planned systems changes are outlined. Equations are derived for the design of a cube corner array on a gravity gradient stabilized satellite in a circular orbit, and the required cube corner for GEOS-C is computed. Use of fixed threshold triggers and electronic and analytic pulse height compensation in present laser ranging systems is discussed. Proposed changes are outlined, including the incorporation of split gate triggers and trackers into the ranging systems and the use of analog and digital centroid measurement techniques. A theoretical consideration of the effects of velocity aberration on the reflected light beam is appended.

Description: A model is presented in explanation of the observation of sodium D-line emission from Io. The model involves: (1) charged-particle sputtering of sodium from Io's surface, (2) ejection of sodium into a cloud surrounding Io, and (3) resonant scattering of incident sunlight. Observational consequences and tests of the proposed model are also discussed.

Description: The procedure for finding the closed-loop Nash equilibrium solution of two-player zero-sum linear time-invariant differential games with quadratic performance criteria and classical information pattern may be reduced in most cases to the solution of an algebraic Riccati equation. Based on the results obtained by Willems, necessary and sufficient conditions for existence of solutions to these equations are derived, and explicit conditions for a scalar example are given.
