Notes: Abstract A method is presented to study dynamics of plants that cannot be separated into individuals such as many grassland, salt marsh and tundra species. A virtual population is created by using a permanent transect line through the vegetation and ‘individuals’ are defined as the branch segments distal to the intercept with the transect line. Addition and loss of ‘individuals’ together with growth or shrinkage form the basis for constructing a size-structured transition matrix. A discrete-event simulation demonstrates that: 1) a virtual population of individuals grows at the same rate as the parent population; and, 2) size-structured transition matrices for a virtual population and parent vegetation have similar dominant and subdominant eigenvalues so a virtual population can be used to describe the dynamics of a parent vegetation. Dwarf birch, Betula nana L., was studied in the northern foothills of the Brooks Range, Alaska, by using photography to record branch intercepts along permanent transect lines. The distal branch segments constitute a virtual population of the parent vegetation. Transects were photographed in 1985 and again in 1986 and changes of branch segments were used to construct two transition matrices for shrubs with and without elevated fertilizer treatment. Analysis of the virtual populations suggests that although Betula nana may show increased branch growth with increased fertilizer, in the long run this shrub may decline in the tundra in response to such treatment.

Notes: Abstract Zinc phosphites ZnPHO3·2.5 H2O, Zn2H2P3H3O9·H2O, Zn3H4P5H5O15·1.5 H2O, ZnH2H2P2H2O6 have been studied at higher temperatures and by X-rays and molecular spectroscopy. Hydrates ZnPHO3·2.5 H2O and Zn2H2P3H3O9·H2O, when heated, yield an anhydrous salt. Thermal decomposition of dihydrogen triorthophosphite and tetrahydrogen pentaorthophosphite leads, before oxidation of the anion, to a mixture of zinc phosphite ZnPHO3 and dihydrogen diorthophosphite ZnH2P2H2O6 and then after loss of water of constitution dihydrogen diorthophosphite converts to zinc diphosphite ZnP2H2O5. The results of the thermal decomposition study were confirmed by X-ray investigation. Anhydrous zinc dihydrogen triorthophosphite Zn2H2P3H3O9 and zinc diphosphite ZnP2H2O5 were hitherto unknown. Infrared spectra confirmed the existence of hydrogen bonding in all the phosphites studied and in the case of zinc phosphite ZnPHO3·2.5 H2O exhibited a symmetry decrease of the anion PHO3 2− from the point group C3v to Cs. In the crystal lattice of ZnPHO3·2.5 H2O hydrogen bonding by water molecules participates, with polyorthophosphites hydrogen bonding shares in the production of anions and in the case of their hydrates there is in addition hydrogen bonding by water molecules.

Notes: Abstract Manganese(II) phosphites MnHPO3·3.6 H2O, Mn3H6P4O12·1.5 H2O, MnH4P2O6·H2O, Mn2H11P5O15·4 H2O, Mn2H17P7O21· 4 H2O and MnH10P4O12·H2O have been studied by IR spectroscopy, thermography and magnetic measurements. Based on the results obtained, the following structural model is proposed: in the compounds studied, each Mn(II) ion is surrounded octahedrally by the oxygen atoms of water molecules and phosphite or polyorthophosphite anions. In the phosphite MnHPO3·3.6H2O the C3v symmetry of the anion decreases to Cs. The anion is characterized by the bond lengthsr PO=1.49 Å and $$r_{PO_2 }$$ =1.52 Å, force constantsK PO=7.8 mdyn/Å and $$K_{PO_2 }$$ =6.4 mdyn/Å and bond ordersN PO=1.68 and $$N_{PO_2 }$$ =2.03. Apart from the interaction between this deformed anion and the Mn(II) cation, hydrogen bonds of approximate length 2.84 Å and energy 5.0 kcal/mole are formed in the phosphite mentioned, linking the water molecules in the coordination sphere. In the other phosphites studied, the following types of hydrogen bond are found: hydrogen bonds linking hydrate water molecules, those between water molecules and the anion, and another systems of hydrogen bonds in the polyorthosphite anions.

Notes: Abstract A summary of recent work on molecular aspects of self-incompatibility in Nicotiana alata is presented. The amino acid sequences of style proteins corresponding to different S-alleles of N. alata have a high level of homology in some regions and are variable in other regions. The regions of homology include N-terminal sequences as well as most of the glycosylation sites and cysteine residues. The glycosyl substituents may consist of a number of ‘glycoforms’. The isolated style S-glycoproteins inhibit in vitro growth of pollen tubes. The S-glycoproteins tested inhibited the growth of pollen of several S-genotypes, and there was some specificity in the interaction. Heat treatment of the isolated S-glycoproteins dramatically increased their activity as inhibitors of pollen tube growth, although the specificity in the interaction was lost. The nature of the S-allele products in pollen is not yet established.

Notes: Abstract Impedance cardiography was used to determine the classical systolic time intervals (STI's) (i.e., pre-ejection period (PEP), left ventricular ejection time (LVET) and the quotient PEP/LVET), in young, healthy, male subjects during supine and seated exercise. With increasing exercise, there was a tendency toward decreases in PEP, LVET, and PEP/LVET. In the seated position, there was an increase in transthoracic Zo incident to the caudal migration of thoracic blood—a result of the postural change. With seated exercise, there were—in contrast to supine exercise—greater decreases in PEP/LVET and greater increases in the Heather index. Similarly, there was a tendency toward increases in dZ/dtmin and the Rapid Ejection Index. We suggest that these differences are related to increased myocardial contractility resulting from the postural augmentation of cardio-sympathetic activity, added to that of exercise per se. This study, as well as previous ones, indicates that impedance cardiography is reliable, effective, and more practicable than the arteriographic method for monitoring STI's. We also believe that certain impedance-derived indices (i.e., transthoracic Zo, dZ/dtmin and the Heather Index) have considerable potential value for physiologic and clinical investigation.
