Notes: Warming of exponentially growing T. pyriformis to 34°C results in severe inhibition of nucleotide pool formation. The utilization of the pool for stable RNA synthesis is poorly affected at the high temperature. It thus appears that the synthesis and processing of ribosomal RNA precursors are not primarily impaired at 34°C.

Notes: Bifunctional arylcyanoacetic esters were oxidatively coupled to high molecular weight, colorless, amorphous polymers, soluble in common organic solvents. Brittle films were obtained by casting or compression molding. Thermal stability of the polymers is poor due to the weak C—C bond formed by oxidative coupling. Radical dissociation-recombination of this bond (evidenced by ESR) results in meso-dl equilibration, lowering the Tg of the polymers.

Notes: Optical properties in different solvents of gramicidin-bis (salicylaldimine) Cu(II) and (5-I-salicyladimine) Cu(II) chelates are intercepted in terms of their molecular structure. A molecular model for the inversion of Contton effects in two different classes of solvents is proposed. This explanation is supported by the study of optical properties of model compounds.

Notes: Experimental data are presented describing the formation of porosity in styrene-divinylbenzene copolymers as a function of the organic components present during the suspension polymerization. The reaction system contains a mixture of diluents such as toluene and hexane, which results in matrices that differ significantly in pore structure from the porous resins so far known. From these data a model of the physical structure is proposed.

Notes: We report the results of semi-empirical calculations describing thermodynamic properties of transfer RNA conformations. The most important new features of the procedure are: (1) the use of parameters obtained from model oligoribonucleotides to evaluate the free energy of helical regions and small hairpin loops, and (2) the use of a model which is somewhat more realistic than the freely jointed chain for evaluating internal loops and intermediate size hairpin loops. The new parameters lead to important quantitative and qualitative differences from predictions which would have been made in the past and lead to a priori predictions of tRNA melting temperatures which are within about 6°C of the experimental values. The results suggest the following conclusions: (1) The early melting transition observed in several tRNA's is partly the result of tertiary unfolding, and partly the result of the loss of some secondary structure. (2) The part of the secondary structure which melts during the early transition is different for different tRNA's. For fMet and Tyr from E. coli, the calculations predict that the dihydrouradiene arm melts out early. For yeast Phe the acceptor stem and anticodon helix melt first. (3) The results also suggest the possibility that tertiary unfolding and early secondary structural melting do not occur independently but are coupled, so that the two types of structure are probably mutually stabilizing.

Notes: An X-ray study has been made of the synthetic polypeptide poly-L-ornithine hydrobromide to investigate whether, like the chemically related polypeptides poly-L-lysine and poly-L-arginine hydrochlorides, it can undergo conformational changes merely from variations in its degree of hydration. X-ray powder and fiber photographs of specimens with from half up to about three molecules of water per ornithine residue show features that suggest a “cross-β-pleated-sheet” structure. Each pleated sheet is formed from parallel chains and the sheets are piled up along the b axis. The spacings, which do not vary appreciably with hydration, can be satisfactorily indexed in terms of an orthogonal unit cell with a = 4.60 Å, b = 30.2 Å, and c = 6.64 Å. These dimensions are shown by models to be compatible with the proposed structure. Removal of the last half molecule of water results in a very diffuse pattern but on rehydration the sharp pattern reappears. Specimens containing four to nine molecules of water per residue show a quite different pattern. Reflections other than equatorial are absent in oriented diagrams except for a 5.4 Å diffuse streak across the meridian which is suggestive of an α-helical structure. Increasing the relative humidity from 86% to about 100% causes the a axis of the hexagonal unit cell to increase from 14.7 Å to 15.3 Å. On drying, the β structure reappears once again. These conformational changes are very similar to those observed in poly-L-lysine hydrochloride except that the latter shows a more stable α-helical form. This difference may be explained in terms of stabilizing hydrophobic interactions between side chains, since ornithine has a shorter side chain than lysine.

Notes: An outline covering the evolution of the more popular tire-reinforcing materials from 1960 to 1970 is presented. Technical and economic factors pro/con steel tire cord for that period are reviewed. Using the past period as a base, the present and future prospects for steel tire cord are analyzed. Comments on the present properties of steel tire cord in relationship to tire requirements are given. In addition, desirable and expected product improvements are covered with special emphasis on achievable product development.

Notes: The viscoelastic behavior of an ethylene-propylene copolymer is analyzed. Two different vulcanization procedures were followed; in the first a binary mixture of initiator-polymer was used, while in the second the polymer was diluted by a solvent. The networks thus obtained show a different viscoelastic behavior depending on the different vulcanization procedure used. Results, analyzed in terms of supramolecular organization being present in the amorphous material, give some important information about the molecular nature of the C2 coefficient of the Mooney-Rivlin equation, and therefore about the well-known deviations from the Gaussian theory shown by all rubber-like networks.
