Description: Discussion of the energy spectra and pitch angle distributions of ring current protons observed with the solid-state proton detector of Explorer 45 during the main and fast recovery phases of a storm on Dec. 17, 1971. Appearances of characteristic changes in the pitch angle distributions of roughly 100-eV protons are interpreted as pitch angle dispersion of rapidly injected protons during their azimuthal drift at L values above 5.

Description: Discussion of proton flux data recorded for 32 samples per spin period by two solid state proton detectors and a three-axis fluxgate magnetometer aboard Explorer 45 which was launched from Kenia into a 220-km-to-5.24 earth radius orbit. The occurrence of an amplifier saturation effect in the presence of high energy protons is noted. Diagrams are included for proton intensities, proton differential flux vs altitude in six energy bands, evolution of proton differential energy spectra through a steep gradient region, omnidirectional fluxes vs altitude, and plasma densities.

Description: Explorer-45 data are reviewed which concern the behavior and dynamics of protons associated with the storm-time and quiet-time extraterrestrial ring current at the equatorial plane. The quiet-time proton energy spectrum exhibits a peak in the interval between 100 and 200 keV. During storm conditions, the intensities of the higher energy protons decrease while the intensities of protons from 10 to 100 keV are greatly enhanced, making them the dominant contributor to the storm-time particle energy density. It is shown that during magnetic storms, the ratio of the particle energy density to the magnetic field energy density reaches values greater than unity, and that the plasmasphere has a strong influence on the characteristics of particle injection.

Description: Sheets of TD-NiCr processed using techniques developed to produce uniform material were tested to supply mechanical and physical property data. Two heats each of 0.025 and 0.051 cm thick sheet were tested. Mechanical properties evaluated included tensile, modulus of elasticity, Poisson's Ratio, compression, creep-rupture, creep strength, bearing strength, shear strength, sharp notch and fatigue strength. Test temperatures covered the range from ambient to 1589K. Physical properties were also studied as a function of temperature. The physical properties measured were thermal conductivity, linear thermal expansion, specific heat, total hemispherical emittance, thermal diffusivity, and electrical conductivity.
