    Notes: Abstract Convergence of the finite element solutionu h of the Dirichlet problem Δu=δ is proved, where δ is the Dirac δ-function (unit impulse). In two dimensions, the Green's function (fundamental solution)u lies outsideH 1, but we are able to prove that $$\parallel u - u^h \parallel _{L^2 } = O (h)$$ . Since the singularity ofu is logarithmic, we conclude that in two dimensions the function log γ can be approximated inL 2 near the origin by piecewise linear functions with an errorO (h). We also consider the Dirichlet problem Δu=f, wheref is piecewise smooth but discontinuous along some curve. In this case,u just fails to be inH 5/2, but as with the approximation to the Green's function, we prove the full rate of convergence:‖u−u h ‖1=O (h 8/2) with, say, piecewise quadratics.

    Notes: Abstract The extrusive rocks of Hekla are predominantly flows of basaltic andesite and andesite (icelandite) but each eruptive cycle is initiated by production of tephra of andesitic, dacitic, and even rhyolitic composition. The evolution of basaltic andesites to dacites and rhyolites can be explained by crystallization and (presumably gravitative) separation of olivine, titaniferous magnetite, plagioclase, and probably augite. No contamination by sialic crustal material is required. Although basalts are never erupted from Hekla the origin of the basaltic andesites is probably best explained by separation of magnesian olivine, augite, and calcic plagioclase from an olivine tholeiite parent, producing an initial differentiation trend toward a high Fe/Mg ratio. The increase in Fe/Mg ratio is limited by the appearance of magnetite as a liquidus phase. From the Fe/Mg ratios of the lavas and from compositions of the plagioclase phenocrysts the water pressure of the basaltic andesites is estimated to have been between 0.6 and 2.4 kb. Total pressure may have been significantly higher. A best estimate for the water content is approximately 2 1/2 to 6 weight percent. This high water content accounts for the explosive initiation of each eruptive cycle and is consistent with fractional crystallization in a shallow magma chamber.

    Notes: Summary Four polysaccharide fractions were obtained by acid and alkaline degradation of purified cell walls of Prototheca spp. and Chlorella spp. These fractions were further hydrolyzed and the component sugars identified. Five Prototheca strains and two Chlorella protothecoides strains have essentially similar polysaccharide compositions, which significantly differ from those of C. vulgaris and C. pyrenoidosa. This emphasizes the close affinity of C. protothecoides to Prototheca spp. not shared by other Chlorella spp.

Deshalb wurden weitere Chromosomenuntersuchungen mit Hilfe der Fluorescenzfärbung mit Quinacrin-Mustard sowie mit der Harnstoff-Banding-Technik vorgenommen. Quantitative Auswertung der Fluorescenzmuster ergab, daß die klinischen Ähnlichkeiten durch eine Monosomie für ungefähr ein Viertel des langen Armes von Chromosom 18 verursacht sein könnten.
    Notes: Summary Because of the phenotypic similarities in our patient, with 45 chromosomes including a D/E (15/18) translocation chromosome, and the 18q-syndrome patients, further chromosome identification studies with quinacrine mustard fluorescence and Urea banding techniques were undertaken. Evidence obtained from quantitation of the fluorescence patterns indicated that the clinical similarities may be due the monosomy for approximately a quarter of the long arm of chromosome 18.

    Notes: Résumé La dépression induite par l'uréthane sur la respiration des mitochondries a été mesurée en présence de la vitamin E (α-tocophérol). Ces agents furent utilisés in vitro et aussi injectés intrapéritonellement. Nos résultats montrent que l'apport de vitamine enraye la diminution de la respiration causée par l'uréthane. Ils attestent le rôle que joue l'uréthane dans la carcinogénèse et la necessité de poursuivre ces expériences sur une plus grande échelle.

    Notes: Abstract In a special case of the Löwdin-Adams variant of perturbation theory, knowledge of the perturbed wavefunction through first order is sufficient for the calculation of the energy correct to the fifth order.
