Description: The basic elements of the physical ephemeris of Mars are reexamined, and the new values adopted for the Mariner 9 mapping are specified, in particular, for the direction of the spin axis and the first meridian.

Description: The most important feature of the extended sources is the double structure characterized in an ideal model by two extended radio-emitting regions situated symmetrically about the nucleus of an optical galaxy or QSO, with a characteristic overall size of about 100 kpc. Not all extended radio sources show this double structure. It has been found that at moderate resolutions about 20% of the well-resolved sources have a core-halo structure. Theoretical proposals for the containment of extended double sources have so far relied either upon self-gravitation of the ejected material or upon assuming the existence of a gaseous intergalactic medium. The advantages and the problems of a model proposed by Burbidge (1967) are discussed, together with the nuclear event serving to release the energy required to make an extended radio source.

Description: In attempts to reconstruct the environment of condensation of solar system materials, particularly exemplified by certain meteorite components, the relative temperatures of the gas and the solid are of critical importance. The relationships that determine the heat balance in a circumsolar grain-gas system are examined. Fundamental considerations show that regardless of opacity or gas density, the gas will always be at a higher temperature than the solid in such regions of the system where condensation is possible. Implications of the characteristic temperature differential between the gas and the condensing solid are discussed.

Description: Theoretical studies and observations of interstellar dust are described in papers dealing with the passive properties of dust grains, their physical and chemical activities in the interstellar medium, and their interactions in association with stars. The papers are grouped according to the principal topics of (1) extinction and polarization, (2) diffuse interstellar features, (3) dust around and in close association with stars, (4) reflection nebulae and other aspects of dust scattering properties, (5) alignment mechanisms, (6) distribution of molecules and processes of molecule formation, (7) radiation effects on dust, (8) physical and chemical interactions of dust with the ambient medium, and (9) gas and dust in H II regions. Individual items are announced in this issue.
