Notizen: Bifunctional arylcyanoacetic esters were oxidatively coupled to high molecular weight, colorless, amorphous polymers, soluble in common organic solvents. Brittle films were obtained by casting or compression molding. Thermal stability of the polymers is poor due to the weak C—C bond formed by oxidative coupling. Radical dissociation-recombination of this bond (evidenced by ESR) results in meso-dl equilibration, lowering the Tg of the polymers.

Notizen: Partial molar excess free enthalpies (or excess chemical potentials) at infinite dilution were obtained over a large temperature range by gas chromatography. Data on n-alkenes in Apiezon M are interpreted by the Prigogine-Patterson theory; data on normal and branched alkanes in squalane and polydimethylsiloxane (PDMS) are discussed in terms of the Prigogine-Patterson theory and the solution theory of Flory, Orwoll, and Vrij. For the alkane-PDMS systems heats of dilution and partial excess heat capacity data are given. The aim of this work is to get some insight in the applicability of these solution theories to mixtures of fluids, the properties of which may slightly violate the basic assumptions of these theories. It is shown that orientational order in and a large cross-sectional chain diameter of the polymer solvent do not affect their applicability to the partical molar excess free enthalpies of apolar mixtures, whereas large dissimilarities between the force fields around the segments of the mixture components and/or dissimilar chain flexibilities detract from the applicability of these theories (alkanes in PDMS).Special attention has been paid to the effects of dissimilar size and shape of the segments of the mixture compounds on the magnitude of the interchange interaction parameter. It is shown that the multiple-connected segment model after Lichtenthaler et al. does not warrant a reliable combinatorial contribution. Comparison of the interaction parameters obtained for n-alkanes in n-alkanes, Apiezon, squalane, and polyisobutylene and for branched alkanes in squalane reveals that the magnitude of this parameter is affected by small end-effects due to the relative weakness of methyl-methylene interactions.

Notizen: A systematic study of the dispersion curves of the refractive indexes of nylon 6 yarns was made. The parameters were the draw ratio and strain. The measurements show that the dispersions of the refractive indexes n∥ and n⊥, parallel and perpendicular to the fiber axis, are equal, independently of draw ratio and strain. The average dispersion equals nF - nC = 109 × 10-4. Consequently, the birefringence is, within experimental accuracy, independent of the wavelength. The refractive indexes and the birefringence show a change in trend at 10-12% strain. This point corresponds to the yield strain in the stress-strain diagrams. The inference is that beyond the yield point the overall molecular orientation must increase less strongly with strain than before. An analysis shows that the Lorentz-Lorenz relation holds for the average refractive index n̄ = ⅓ (n∥ + 2n⊥). So the change in n̄ versus draw ratio is mainly due to the change in density. By applying the Lorentz-Lorenz relation to the change of n̄ on straining, a value of Poisson's ratio (μ) could be derived. The average value found for nylon 6 yarns was μ = 0.48, which means that the density hardly changes with strain.

Notizen: The partial molar excess free enthalpies and enthalpies as well as the molar excess enthalpies of a number of n-alkane systems were reexamined within the scope of the polymer solution theory of Flory, Orwoll, and Vrij and that of Prigogine in the version after Delmas, Patterson, and Somcynsky. A semiempirical method was used to obtain characteristic n-alkane data, which obey the principle of corresponding states. By using these data (instead of those from the partition function after Flory and collaborators), a physically realistic interpretation of the excess free enthalpies over the whole concentration range is possible if the combinatorial contribution is purely athermal in nature. Both theories give an enthalpy interaction parameter near zero as expected, whereas neither a significant end effect nor an entropic interaction contribution is apparent from the analyses of the excess free enthalpies. The poor results obtained for the partial excess enthalpies and the enthalpies of mixing reflect the inadequacy of the partition functions on which these modern solution theories are based.

Notizen: An expression is derived for the partitioning of a solute molecule in a two-phase system: swollen gel and free solvent. The approach is thermodynamic, and no specific mechanism for the accessibility of the solute to the gel is assumed. Instead, general interaction terms between the components, i.e., polymer-solvent-solute, are introduced.

Notizen: The kinetics of the photoreduction of benzophenone and the reductive photopolymerization of diaryl ketones are closely interrelated. The photoreductive polyrecombination presents the characteristics of a polycondensation, namely, an increase in molecular weight with reaction time. In the absence of side reactions, benzophenone and diketone Ia show identical behavior toward hydrogen abstraction, as is reflected in the di-bis rate constants of hydrogen abstraction.

Notizen: The irradiation of nonconjugated bichromophoric systems, diaryl ketones, with ultraviolet light in the presence of hydrogen donors, such as isopropanol or bisbenzhydrol, yields high polymers. Two series of arylketones were investigated, namely bisbenzophenones and bisketotriazoles. The cage reaction, which arises from the cross combination between the acetone ketyl and bisbenzophenone ketyl radicals, was estimated to be very small but may constitute a chain termination reaction in the photopolymerization in isopropanol. The photopolymerization of bisdiketone-dihydrol systems was found to yield polymers with much higher molecular weights than those obtained from the photopolymerization of bisdiketone-isopropanol systems. The photolysis of some binary mixtures of aromatic diketones in the presence of isopropanol yielded statistical copolypinacols. In some favorable cases, the NMR spectrum of the copolymer obtained showed three distinct linkages and from the infrared spectrum intensities the copolymers composition and the number average length of the sequences may be determined.

Notizen: The solid-state photoreactivity of a series of maleimides and bismaleimides is studied Various crystalline maleimides are found to dimerize on irradiation by ultraviolet light Based on this discovery, the photopolymerizability of the related bismaleimides in the crystalline state is examined. As a result it is found that some N,N,-alkylenebismaleimides polymerize into highly crystalline polymers. The polymers do not melt below their decomposition temperature (〉300°C) and are practically insoluble in all solvents. The obtained irradiation products are different from the reaction products of the solution-phase photochemistry. Closely related bismaleimides, such as members of a homologous series, show substantial differences in their solid-state photochemical behavior; on excitation they either lead to polymers or are not reactive. This indicates that the solid-state photoreactivity of maleimides and bismaleimides is controlled by the geometry of their crystal structure.
