Abstract
The principles of spectroscopic sounding of planetary atmospheres are reviewed, showing how the vertical temperature structure may be derived from measurements of thermal emission by carbon dioxide. The Selective Chopper Radiometer, designed jointly by Oxford and Heriot-Watt Universities is then described in detail and results obtained from this instruments on the NIMBUS IV satellite are presented. Future developments of this kind of observation are briefly discussed.
