Notes: Summary 1. Fiji disease is an important virus disease of sugarcane in many countri es. In Fiji, its vector is the leafhopper Perkinsiella vitiensis. 2. The usual measure of resistance under insectary test conditions is the number of days required after exposure to viruliferous hoppers for half the test plants of a clone to show the diagnostic symptoms (SD50). Previous studies have shown this measure is related to resistance under field conditions and is convenient to record. 3. A quantitative genetic analysis has been made of resistance to Fiji disease in a hybrid sugarcane population. 4. The SD50 measure of resistance showed a heritability and repeatability of about 0.4. These results indicated that Fiji disease resistance can be improved by breeding and selection. 5. No unfavourable correlations were detected between resistance and other commercial attributes. 6. In a mixed stand, sugarcane clones differ for the number of leafhoppers found on them. However no necessary relationship was detected between this character and resistance to Fiji disease.

Notes: Conclusions 1. Under the action of n-butyllithium on benzo-[b]-naphtho-[2, 3-d]-thiophene (I), the lithium atom is inserted in the 4-position of the benzonaphthothiophene system. 2. In the desulfurization of 4- and 7-alkyl derivatives of benzonaphthothiophene (I) by Raney nickel, together with desulfurization there is a partial hydrogenation of the alkyl derivatives ofβ-phenylnaphthalene formed. 3. On the basis of a comparative study of the IR spectra of 4- and 7-alkyl derivatives of benzonaphthothiophene (I) and alkyl derivatives of naphthalenes, general principles in the vibrational spectra of these systems were found, which permitted a reliable confirmation of the position of the substituent in 4- and 7-alkyl derivatives of (I).

Notes: Abstract The magnetic effects predicted by Leggett and Rice for Fermi liquids in the collisionless regime have been verified. Spin-echo measurements are reported which demonstrate the existence of spin waves and undamped spin currents in liquid3He and dilute3He-4He solutions. The experimental results are compared with the theoretical expressions of Leggett and Rice, and values of the Fermi liquid interaction parameter $$\lambda = \left[ {1/(1 + F_0^a )} \right] - \left\{ {1/[1 + (F_1^a /3)]} \right\}$$ are derived for three samples: liquid3He atP=0 and 27 atm, and a 6.4%3He-4He solution. In addition, some techniques for direct observation of individual spin-wave modes are explored and the results reported.

Notes: Summary Wheat and ryegrass were grown in pots containing soil that had either been irradiated, fumigated with methyl bromide, fumigated with formaldehyde, or left untreated. All pots received a basal dressing of potassium, phosphorus and magnesium; response to nitrogen was tested by applying either 0, 0.177 or 0.354 g nitrogen per pot. Irradiation increased the growth of wheat and ryegrass; uptake of nitrogen was also increased in both crops. The amount of fertilizer nitrogen equivalent to the nitrogen supplied by seeds and soil (the “N value”) can be calculated from the efficiency of uptake of fertilizer nitrogen and used to allow for the effect on crop growth of the nitrogen released by irradiated soil. With wheat the increase in growth can be attributed solely to the extra mineral nitrogen released by irradiated soil. However, ryegrass grew a little better than would have been expected if the only effect of irradiation was to increase the release of soil nitrogen. Fumigation with methyl bromide or formaldehyde increased the growth of wheat and ryegrass not given fertilizer nitrogen. However, fumigation with methyl bromide left ionic bromide in the soil, and this depressed the growth of wheat receiving fertilizer nitrogen. Formaldehyde also left residues; these influenced soil metabolism and sometimes depressed the growth of plants given fertilizer nitrogen.

Notes: Conclusions The basic technical parameters for melting and producing magnesia-alumina spinel in an electric arc furnace OKB-514 were evaluated and specified. A study was made of the properties of certain compositions of spinel, the melting of an experimental batch of spinel, and using this as a basis, high-qualityroof products were made.
