Notes: Summary. Translocation of 3-amino-1,2,4-triazole-5-14C (14C-aminotriazole) was compared to that of 14C-assimilates in couch grass (Agropyron repens (L.) Beauv.) at three different growth stages.Assimilates of 14CO2 were translocated from the treated shoot to other shoots and rhizomes at the 2–3-leaf and 3–4-leaf stages of development. Much less labelled material was translocated into untreated shoots at the 5-leaf stage. More 14C-assimilates were translocated to the roots than to untreated shoots at all developmental stages. The translocation patterns of 14C-aminotriazole and 14C-assimilates were similar. Two metabolites, A and B, were formed from 14C-aminotriazole, which chromatographed identically to previously described metabolites in Cirsium arvense (L.) Scop. A was further metabolized into B. Labelled aminotriazole and its two metabolites were translocated throughout the plants. Metabolite A was phytotoxic when concentrated and re-applied to couch grass, but its properties were not those of Unknown II from Cirsium arvense. They were the same as those of Unknown III. Whether or not metabolite A and Unknown III are identical was not established. Notes: Standard resistivity configurations lose resolution in regions where multiple geologic layering of high conductivity contrast occurs. To partially circumvent this problem an electrode configuration was used, which includes a current electrode at depth down a drill hole in a water field, to examine the possibility of delineating ground-water flow channels. Results show the value of this technique in enhancing the electrical anomaly and hence determining structure. It was found that the ground water in this area flows primarily in fracture traces in the dolomite. Moreover, it was determined from well log synthesis that these fracture traces increase the effective porosity in the flow region by approximately ten percent.

Notes: Verticillium wilt of Pelargonium x domesticum caused by Verticillium albo-atrum and Verticillium dahliae is recorded in the U.K. Naturally-infected plants showed severe symptoms during the summer but there was some recovery in the autumn and winter. In experiments, symptom severity increased at high temperatures but was not markedly in fluenced by day-length treatments. Isolates of V. dahliae from chrysanthemum and pelargonium readily infected either host. Benomyl drenches at 1·5 g/4·5 1. at the rate of 200 ml/plant suppressed symptom expression and resulted in a high proportion of healthy cuttings from infected stock plants.

Notes: Symptom production was recorded during a 31 month period in a commercial crop of carnations infected by Fusarium oxysporum f. dianthi. In the first year spread was slow but increased to approximately 12 in. (0·305 m) of bed length per month by the end of the crop. The degree of infection and colonization of the plants did not differ greatly at 18–20°C or 23–25°C, although symptoms appeared more rapidly at the higher temperature.Benomyl, applied as a drench to each plant at the rate of 1·5 g and 3·0 g/4·5 l./200 ml. suppressed symptom expression and was not markedly phytotoxic. Best results were obtained when the fungicide was applied within a week of planting into infested soil. Bioassay results of treated plants indicated a maximum level of activity within the plant 10–14 days after application.

Notes: Wet-extracted concentrate spray dried at two pH levels was evaluated for use in protein-fortified bread and as a component in meat loaf to reduce juice and fat cook-out during baking and to reduce meat requirement. Bread loaves containing air-classified glandless cone, 100% wheat flour and LCP glanded flour were significantly larger in volume than loaves from other blends, but there was no real difference among loaf volume of breads containing these three treatments. pH of spray drying had a marked effect on baking properties of the wet-process cone; pH 4.5 yielded a poor quality loaf while pH 6.8 loaf volume was equal to bread containing glandless cottonseed flours. Taste panel evaluations showed meat loaves containing 25% wet-extracted protein concentrate to be quite acceptable: milder or more bland than all-meat loaves and somewhat softer or smoother in texture.
