    Description: A preliminary analysis of magnetometer data from Apollo 15 subsatellite is concluded. Remanent magnetization is a characteristic property of the moon, and the distribution is such that a complex pattern is produced. A mapping of the distribution is feasible with the present experiment. Lunar induction fields produced by transients in interplanetary magnetic field are detectable at satellite orbit. Magnetometer data will provide estimates of the latitude and longitude dependences of interior conductivity. The plasma void extends to some altitude below the satellite orbit and probably the lunar surface. Solar wind near the limbs is usually strongly disturbed.

    Description: It is reported that the objectives of the particles and fields subsatellite (PFS) magnetometer experiment are to calculate the interior electrical conductivity of the moon, to survey the remanent magnetization of the lunar surface, and to study the interaction of the moon with its plasma environment. The magnetometers also support the PFS particle experiment by providing onboard magnetic sectoring and a posteriori pitch angle data and plasma diagnostics.

    Description: Magnetic field measurements made with the Apollo 15 subsatellite established the existence of remanent magnetization over much of the Moon's surface. The major features of the structure of the measured remanent field are apparently associated with large craters, the most apparent detected to date being that in the vicinity of the Van de Graaff crater. A preliminary contour map of relative magnetic intensity was produced for a limited region of the Moon. A high resolution plot of the Van de Graaff region was constructed from vector data in an attempt to locate the source of the largest feature observed.

    Description: A copper vapor laser, utilizing a pulsed discharge transverse to a supersonic flow of copper vapor, argon, and helium and oscillating at 5106 and 5782 A, has been built and tested. Laser energy densities per pulse of 2.5 microjoules per cu cm have been achieved to date. Laser pulse widths of up to 185 nsec have been obtained with delay times after initiation of the current pulse of 220 to 250 nsec. Both the delay time and pulse width are in good agreement with theoretical predictions. Quenching of the laser pulse is shown to be due to a rapid increase in the rate of equilibration of the lasing levels by electron collisions, and to a decrease in the differential pumping of the lasing levels from the ground state because of a decay in the electron temperature.

    Description: Power spectra of the interplanetary magnetic field measured by near-earth satellites upstream from the earth's bow shock are free from terrestrial contamination provided the field at the satellite does not intersect the bow shock. Considerable spectral enhancement for the range of frequencies 0.01 to 1.00 Hz, due to turbulence caused by the shock, may occur if the field observed at the satellite intersects the shock. This turbulence occurs frequently in both the morning and afternoon quadrants. In the frequency band from 0.07 to 1 Hz, this noise decreases in amplitude with radial distance from the shock with an attenuation length of 4 R sub E.

    Description: Present observations have revealed a variety of magnetic wave phenomena in the tail, from ULF to ELF frequencies. However, only VLF measurements of electric fields have been made. These measurements reveal that the tail is electrically quiet at VLF frequencies, except in the near-earth plasma sheet during substorm expansion phases. The magnetic waves observed include: waves with periods of about 2 min which cause the plasma sheet boundary position and the neutral sheet location to oscillate; waves from .1 to 1 Hz which occur throughout the plasma sheet during plasma sheet expansions; and ELF waves which occur sporadically in the plasma sheet.

    Description: A simple expression is obtained using a diffusion model for the effect of ambient pressure on the outgassing or evaporation rate of materials. The correctness of the expression is demonstrated by comparing the estimates from this expression with actual weight loss measurements. It is shown that the rate of mass loss is governed by the ratio of mean free path to the characteristic dimension of the surface in question.

    Description: Two models, a system performance model and a program assessment model, have been developed to assist NASA management in the evaluation of development alternatives for the Earth Observations Program. Two computer models were developed and demonstrated on the Goddard Space Flight Center Computer Facility. Procedures have been outlined to guide the user of the models through specific evaluation processes, and the preparation of inputs describing earth observation needs and earth observation technology. These models are intended to assist NASA in increasing the effectiveness of the overall Earth Observation Program by providing a broader view of system and program development alternatives.

    Description: An experimental analysis was conducted to determine the effects of gas stream flow parallel to the discharging surface on the flow characteristics of a wire-form porous material. Flow data were obtained over a range of transpiration airflow rates from 0.129 to 0.695/grams per second-centimeter squared and external gas stream Mach numbers from 0 to 0.46. The conclusion was drawn that the flow characteristics of the wire cloth were not significantly affected by the external gas flows.
