Notes: Summary The object of the present paper is to investigate magneto-elastic waves and disturbances in initially stressed conducting media. Firstly, the theory of magneto-elastic surface waves in a conducting medium under an initial uniaxial tension has been deduced and then it has been employed to investigate the particular cases of surface waves such as Rayleigh, Love and Stoneley waves. Secondly, propagation of waves in an elastic layer has been considered using the fundamental equations of motion for magneto-elastic waves in conductors under an initial uniaxial tension or compression. This is followed by the case of plane Lamb's problem in a magneto-elastic semi-space under the same initial tension. The final results obtained in the above cases are in agreement with the corresponding classical problems when the initial tension is zero and the magnetic field is absent.

Notes: Summary A one dimensional problem concerning the wave propagation in a non-homogeneous conical rod having its cross-section directly proportional to the square of the distance from a chosen point is considered in this paper. One end of the rod is subjected to a pressure step while the other end is stress free and the pulse shape is examined when the propagation speed of the wave has a particular continuous distribution over the entire rod.

Notes: Summary The paper is concerned with the investigation of the magneto-elastic waves and disturbances in initially stressed conducting media. Firstly, (a) the steady state response to moving loads in a magneto-elastic initially stressed conducting medium under an uniaxial tension has been discussed. Secondly, (b) the Lamb's problem corresponding to a line load suddenly applied in a magneto-elastic initially stressed conducting half-space bounded by a plane under uniaxial tension has been investigated. The final results obtained in both cases are in agreement with the corresponding classical problems when the initial tension is zero and the magnetic field is absent.

Notes: Abstract Statistical procedures for (1) sampling, (2) testing the existence of a preferred direction, and (3) testing homogeneity of twodimensional directional data, which have been developed by the authors for paleocurrent studies, are presented. It is well known that conventional methods of statistical analysis are not applicable to directional data (e.g., crossbedding and ripplemark directions, grain lineations, etc.) which are “circularly distributed” on a compass dial. A sampling technique for directional data has been developed using the circular measures of dispersion and approximate ANOVA of G. S. Watson. On the basis of a pilot survey, it is possible to compute the minimum sample size required for estimating, with a desired precision, the mean paleocurrent direction of a formation. The optimum allocation of sample size between and within outcrops also can be accomplished at a minimum cost. The procedure described for testing uniformity (or lack of preferred direction) is based on the arc lengths made by successive sample points and is simple to use if the sample size is moderate. A table of critical points and a numerical example are given after a description of the test procedure. Finally, the procedures for testing the homogeneity of directional data from several geological formations are described by (1) tests for equality of the resultant directions (polar vectors) and (2) tests for equality of dispersions. With these tests it is possible to determine whether the paleocurrent directions from different geological formations belong to significantly different populations.

    Description / Table of Contents: Die Darstellung der Dioxitrifluorovanadate, MI2 (VO2F3)(M = Na+, NH+4, 1/2Ni2+) und MII(HVO2F3)2· xH2O (M = Cu2+, Ni2+, Co2+) wird beschrieben. Leitfähigkeitsmessungen von K2VO2F3 in verschiedener Konzentration deuten auf eine Dissoziation 2K+-und VO2F2-3-Ionen.
Notes: Preparation of the salts of the series dioxotrifluorovanadates, M2I (VO2F3), where M = Na+, NH+4, 1/2Ni2+ and MII(HVO2F3)2· xH2O where M = Cu2+, Ni2+ and Co2+ are described. Molecular conductivity measurement of potassium dioxotrifluorovanadate(V), K2VO2F3, at different dilutions indicates that it dissociates primarily into 2K+ and VO2F2-3 ions.

Description / Table of Contents: Es werden die Darstellung und die Eigenschaften der Salze M3IVO2F4 (M = NH4+, Na+, K+, 1/2 Ni2+ 1/3 [Co(NH3)6]3+) beschrieben. AgVO3. Röntgen-Untersuchungen sind an (NH4) VO2F4- und Na3VO2F4-Pulvern durchgeführt worden.
Notes: Preparation and properties of the salts of the series MI3VO2F4, where M = NH4+, Na+, K+, 1/2 Ni2+, and 1/3 [Co(NH3)6]3+ are described. Molecular conductivity of Na3VO2F4 at different dilutions indicates that Na3VO2F4 dissociates into 3 Na+ and VOaF43- ions. Ion exchange study of (NH4)3VO2F4 solution through cation exchange resin (H+ form) suggests that the corresponding acid decomposes partly to vanadium pentoxide. Reaction between (NH4)3VO2F4 with BaCl2 and AgNO3 solutions shows the formation of BaVO2F3 and AgVO3 respectively. Thermogravimetric study of (NH4)3VO2F4 shows the formation of impure vanadium pentoxide as the ultimate product on heating up to 450°C. X-ray powder diffraction data are given for (NH4)3VO2F4 and Na3VO2F4.
