Notes: The effects of 4 chemicals on the germination promotion of stratified and unstratified seeds of loblolly pine (Pinus taeda) and baldcypress (Taxodium distichum) were studied. The chemicals used were gibberellic acid, kinetin, potassium nitrate and thiourea, each at 3 different concentrations.Stratification promoted the germination of both seed species. Certain concentrations of gibberellic acid, potassium nitrate and thiourea improved the germination of unstratified loblolly pine and baldcypress seeds while kinetin had no stimulatory effect. All 4 chemicals at specific concentrations promoted the germination of loblolly pine seeds stratified for a short period of time. Considering both speed and completeness of germination, best results were obtained when 21-day stratified seeds were treated with either gibberellic acid (100 mg/1) or kinetin (10 mg/1). In baldcypress, on the other hand, none of these chemicals had any stimulatory effect on the germination of stratified seeds. Germination of both species of seeds was either partially or completely inhibited by the highest concentration of thiourea (30,000 mg/1) used.

Notes: Abstract Utilizing the facts (i) that the number of particles in the many-boson system is conserved and (ii) that the Hamiltonian is Hermitian, a new set of variables comprising “action” and “angle” variables has been introduced. These variables are conjugate in the “mean” and provide a rigorous approach to introducing phase variables for “total-number-conserving many-boson systems.”

Notes: Summary Elastic waves radiated by a finite circular disc source are compared for two models by treating it as the limit of an explosion inside a cavity in the form of a circular cylinder of small height or an oblate spheroid of small minor axis.

Notes: Summary The propagation of Rayleigh waves in the earth is investigated in the period range of about 60 to 590 seconds. It has been shown that a set of earth-flattening approximations can be used to transform the heterogeneous spherical earth into plane-layered earth on which the dispersion computations by matrix method can be applied effectively to describe the fundamental mode of spheroidal oscillations involving the crust and the mantly only.

Notes: Summary Elastic wave propagation problem has been studied in the composite medium — a gravitating liquid layer overlying an elastic half-space. Assuming moving normal pressure load on the free surface, an attempt has been made to study the order of disturbance on the earth's surface. In the discussion asymptotic values of the displacement, components have been considered for small values of the parameter.

Notes: Abstract Diffuse cosmic X-rays in the energy range 20–125 keV were measured in four balloon flights from Hyderabad, India during 1968–70 using almost identical X-ray telescopes mounted on oriented platforms. The results from these flights show that the spectrum of the diffuse cosmic X-rays can be represented by the form dN/dE=29E −2.1±0.3 photons/(cm2 sr s keV) in 20–125 keV interval after corrections for photoelectric absorption and Compton scattering effects in the atmosphere. The best fit spectrum of all published results in the energy interval 20–200 keV can be represented by the form dN/dE=36E −2.1±0.1 photons/(cm2 sr s keV) after similar corrections are effected, and there is no need for a change of spectral index in this energy interval. The intensity at 20 keV obtained from the above spectrum agrees well with that given by the spectral form dN/dE=10E −1.7±0.1 photons/(cm2 sr s keV) in the energy interval 1–20 keV in several rocket experiments. Therefore it is concluded that if there is a break in the spectrum, it occurs between 10 and 20 keV with a change of spectral index by about 0.5, or the index is continuously changing from 1.7±0.1 to 2.1±0.1 in 10–20 keV interval. The implications of the results are briefly discussed.

Notes: Abstract It is shown that the velocity term, occurring in the expression for the rate of energy gain by the Fermi mechanism of acceleration, is to be taken into account in case of acceleration of non-relativistic particles. A spectral form of accelerated particles is derived on this basis and is called the ‘Fermi Spectrum’. At non-relativistic energies this spectral form is significantly different from the currently used forms of power law in total energy per nucleon and in rigidity, and lies about midway between them. It is shown that using this form of source spectrum of cosmic ray nuclei, satisfactory agreement can be obtained between the calculated values and the observed ones of the ratios of H2/He4 and He3/He4, and the energy spectra of protons and helium nuclei near the Earth.

Notes: Summary Regular observations at an affshore station near the dam showed a stratified distribution of phytoplankton from 1964 to 1966, interrupted only by the seasonal flood. Thereafter, the operation of hydroelectric turbines together with occasional spilling reversed the pattern to an overturned distribution irrespective of the season. The substantially increased outflow during this period reduced the stability and prevented stratification in the proximity of the dam. There was an appreciable increase of phytoplankton dominated by the diatom Synedra acus Kuetzing during 1968.
