Notes: Abstract Five non-crystalline calcium phosphate precipitates prepared from solutions varying in pH, degree of supersaturation and carbonate content were examined by physicochemical and morphological methods. X-ray diffraction, infrared spectrophotometry and electron diffraction measurements confirmed the amorphous nature of each precipitate. Both transmission and scanning electron microscopy demonstrated that the native elemental particles of all 5 synthetic products were spherical in shape and independent of the preparative procedures employed. Four of the precipitates contained spherules of similar sizes (200–1200 Å in diameter) while the one relatively rich in carbonate exhibited much larger particles (700–2000 Å in diameter). The spherules were uniformly dense to the electron beam when viewed with the current density at its lowest useful level. Exposure to higher electron currents immediately resulted in the development of numerous electron-lucent centers in each particle. Heating in vacuum to temperatures up to 600° did not change the amorphous nature of the precipitates or the morphology and size of their elemental particles even though almost all of the water contained in the original precipitates was removed by this process. Heat treatment did not induce formation of electron-lucent centers. On the contrary it, made the spherules increasingly resistant to beam damage. These findings suggest that the beam electrons interact with the oxygen or hydrogen atoms of the aqueous constituent of the amorphous calcium phosphate and that this initial reaction is followed by displacement and/or loss of other atoms.

Notes: Summary Hybrid embryos from hexaploid wheat x maize crosses rapidly lose the maize chromosomes to produce haploid wheat embryos. Such embryos almost always aborted when left to develop on the plant, and only 1 was recovered from 2440 florets (0.17% of the expected number). Embryos had greater viability in spikelet culture, 47 (26.5% of the expected number) being recovered from 706 ovaries. Thirty-two of these embryos germinated to give green plants, 31 of which were haploid (21 wheat chromosomes) and 1 of which was euploid (42 wheat chromosomes). Spikelet culture enabled 17.1% of the expected number of embryos to be recovered as haploid plants, a 100-fold improvement on allowing embryos to develop in vivo. Ten haploid plants of ‘Chinese Spring’ (kr1, kr2), 13 plants of ‘Chinese Spring (Hope 5A)’ (kr1, Kr2), and 8 of ‘Hope’ (Kr1, Kr2) were recovered. The potential of wheat x maize crosses for wheat haploid production and for gene transfer from maize to wheat is discussed.

Notes: Abstract Several theoretical and numerical models have been published which describe the evolution of a Stokes beam in a Raman medium excited by a focussed pump beam. Generally, the published theoretical departures from the plane-wave theory of Raman scattering are based on assumptions about the power of the pump beam. In this paper we present a theoretical model which is shown to be in excellent agreement with an exact numerical treatment, and which is valid without restrictions on the pump power. Its predictions are used to indicate the range of validity of earlier theories.

Notes: Abstract Supersonic molecular beams of D2, CH4, NH3, and C2H4 are investigated in the expansion region employing collinear coherent anti-Stokes Raman spectroscopy (CARS). The analysis of rotationally resolved CARS spectra allows the determination of temperatures in the beam. The rotational relaxation as a function of stagnation pressure and separation from the nozzle is studied by recording theQ branch for D2 and the ν3 R andS branches for CH4. Rotational temperatures for NH3 are determined by investigating the complete ν3 band. At strong stagnation conditions broad structures arise which can be attributed to the formation of NH3 clusters. For C2H4 the ν5 band with resolved rotational structure is reported. Again, at larger distances from the nozzle, broad structures are observed. They are assigned to the ν1 and ν5 vibrations in the C2H4 cluster.

Notes: Abstract Nonlinear absorption and refractive index changes in wide-gap semiconductors (CdS, CdSSe, and GaSe) after ps light irradiation are determined with an excite-and-probebeam spectrometer. Based on a simple model pump-pulse induced chirp parameters on a signal pulse of different wavelength are calculated. Possible applications are discussed.

Notes: Abstract Room-temperature two-element latching circuits are experimentally demonstrated using GaAs multiple-quantum-well (MQW) nonlinear etalons under single-wavelength bistable operation. Signal power gains of up to 4 and contrast ratios of 10 have been achieved at milliwatt power levels with 1-μs pulses, which will allow the construction of more complicated digital optical circuits using diode lasers as the light sources. The problems of applying these nonlinear etalons to fast optical signal processing are also discussed. Numerical simulations show that the gain vanishes as the pulse duration decreases and approaches the carrier lifetime.

Notes: Abstract We first consider theoretically the various mechanisms contributing to the Kerr nonlinearity in small gold particles. The major ones are the conduction electron intraband contribution, the saturation of direct interband transitions and the change in dielectric constant due to hot photoexcited electrons. We present experimental results obtained using optical phase conjugation in gold-doped glasses. By varying several parameters, we were able to ascertain the origin of the nonlinear response: the main contributions are the hotelectron and the interband contributions. All experimental results, including saturation behaviour, are fully understood.

Notes: Summary The pharmacokinetics of xamoterol, a β-adrenoceptor partial agonist under clinical evaluation for the treatment of mild to moderate heart failure, have been studied in 12 healthy male subjects. They received 14 mg i.v. and oral doses of 50 and 200 mg as a tablet and 200 mg as a solution in a 4 way cross-over design. After i.v. dosing the elimination half-life was 7.7 h, the total body clearance was 224 ml·min−1 and the volume of distribution at steady-state (Vss) was 48 l. Sixty-two percent of the dose was recovered unchanged in urine. After oral doses, the absolute bioavailability of xamoterol was shown to be 5% irrespective of whether the dose was administered as a tablet or solution. Peak plasma concentrations occurred at about 2 h for the tablet dose and slightly earlier (1.4 h) for the solution. Peak plasma concentration, AUC and urinary recovery of unchanged drug increased in proportion to dose. The apparent elimination half-life after oral doses (16 h) was significantly longer than that observed after an intravenous dose. Despite the low bioavailability, the degree of inter-subject variability of oral bioavailability was small probably indicating that the controlling factor is the hydrophilic nature of the molecule rather than extensive first pass metabolism or poor dissolution of xamoterol from the tablet formulation.

Notes: Summary The antihypertensive effects and steady-state pharmacokinetics of doxazosin, as well as the bioequivalence of four dosage forms, were studied in 25 hypertensive patients. For an 8 mg daily dose mean Cmax at steady-state for all patients was 108 ng/ml; the mean tmax was 1.8 h. The mean terminal elimination half-life was 22 h. The four tablets containing 1, 2, 4, or 8 mg of doxazosin were bioequivalent in delivering the 8 mg dose. In patients with mild to moderate hypertension, 26-day treatment with doxazosin resulted in blood pressure reduction of 10/7 mm Hg in the supine and 13/18 mm Hg in the standing position. Adverse effects were generally mild and of brief duration.
