Notes: A description is given of an apparatus for the continuous recording during crystallization of the spherulite radius, in the range of one half micron to a few microns, by scanning the Hv scattering pattern. At the same time the apparatus measures the change in intensity of the transmitted depolarized light, which is a measure of the overall rate of crystallization. The theoretical aspects of this measuring procedure are briefly discussed on the basis of light scattering by perfect and imperfect spherulites.

Notes: The spherulite growth rate, the maximum spherulite radius, and the overall rate of crystallization of poly(ethylene terephthalate) (PETP) were measured by means of scattering and transmission of depolarized light. The influence of crystallization temperature, molecular weight, and additives on the above-mentioned quantities was investigated. An expression has been derived for the spherulite growth rate of PETP as a function of crystallization temperature and the number-average molecular weight for M̄n in the range of 19,000 to 39,000.

Description / Table of Contents: Lochfraß an einem austenitischen Stahl.
Notes: A sulfuric acid plant was equipped with heat exchangers with Nicrofer 3620 tubing. The cooling medium was sea water. Within 5 weeks after start-up some of the tubes failed by pitting, showing that it is impossible to use stainless steel as a heat transfer material in sea water unless the molybdenum content is very high.

Description / Table of Contents: Hochtemperatur-Sprödbruch eines Flansches aus austenitischem Stahl.
Notes: A 321 SS 16″ 400 lb. flange, located at the exit of the waste heat boiler in a reformer gas line, was subjected to high line expansions stresses. It failed in creep rupture after 4 2/3 years. An expansion joint was installed to absorb the line stresses. The new 321 flange broke in 30 days. The fracture was mostly intergranular but definitely not of the creep type. Large stringers in the matrix, associated with the forging direction, were identified as sigma phase. Since process temperature was 1135 °F and metal temperature 890 °F, the formation of sigma by process conditions within 30 days was highly unlikely. Heat treating parameters which could have caused this condition were established.

Notes: The thermal decomposition of poly(oxypropylene) glycols was studied under nitrogen and dynamic operating conditions over the temperature range of 320° to 700°K by means of a differential scanning calorimeter. The differential energy losses due to changes in emissivity of the reference and sample pans were computed by modifying the baseline of the thermograms. Kinetic parameters obtained with the help of the Borchardt and Daniels theory indicate that the reaction is zero order and that the activation energy increases with molecular weight of the polymer. The rate of heating of the sample, the rate of flow of nitrogen, and the initial mass of the sample do not have significant effects on the kinetics of the decomposition.

Notes: A polyelectrolyte synthesized from cis-1,4-polyisoprene, containing aminosulfonate and carboxylate groups was shown to have an anticoagulant activity of about 1/30 compared with heparin. Because the substance prevents the coagulation of plasma in the presence of thrombin it is assumed that it acts as an antithrombin.

Description / Table of Contents: Eine Reihe von stabilen Übergangsmetall-Alkyl-Verbindungen von Typ M(CH2X) (M = Zr, Ti, Hf) wirken als Katalysatoren für die Polymerisation verschiedener Vinylverbindungen, z.B. von Styrol, p-Bromstyrol, Methylmethacrylat und Äthylen.
Notes: A range of stable transition metal alkyl compounds of given formula M(CH2X)4(M = Zr, Ti, Hf) exhibit polymerisation activity in the absence of light towards certain vinyl monomers, e.g., styrene, p-bromostyrene, methyl methacrylate and ethylene. Rates of polymerisation increase markedly on exposure to light at wavelengths between 450 and 600 nm. It has been established that these polymerisations are probably of the coordinated anionic type. At wavelengths below 450 nm the polymerisation is dominated by a radical process, the radicals being produced by the photolysis of the catalyst (zirconium tetrabenzyl).

Notes: An outline is given of the developments and the present knowledge of the flame resistance of fibres. The principles of flame-resistance are only partly - mainly qualitatively - understood. There is certainly room for much more fundamental research. The development of flame- resistant textile fibres was a highly pragmatic one. Further progress will be largely determined by public regulations and legislations. In the field of flame-retarding additives to existing materials a number of spectacular successes have been achieved, but they relate mainly to cellulose fibres. The development of new flame-resistant synthetic fibres has made great progress in the last ten years. A very interesting new achievement is the development of a nonflammable chelated polymer, poly-(terephthaloyl-oxalic-bisamidrazone), which is here described for the first time and which may well prove to be the first representative of a new class of polymers in the market.

Notes: A new typical orientation pattern of polyethylene has been observed in extruded, melt-drawn composites containing 10% polyethylene and 90% polystyrene. In these composites, the polyethylene phase is dispersed in the polystyrene matrix as thin, long ribbons (width 1000 Å, thickness 500 Å). The b axis of the crystallites is found oriented preferentially along the long dimension of the ribbons, i.e., in the extrusion direction. The a and c axes of the crystallites show no preferred orientation. This texture pattern is attributed to the fact that, in view of the small cross section of the polyethylene phase, crystallization can proceed only along the long axis of the ribbons. Since the b axis is the direction of fastest growth in polyethylene (and the radial direction in a spherulite), most polyethylene unit cells are oriented with their b axes in the long dimension of the ribbons.
