Notizen: 4-Methyl-2,6-di-tert-butylphenol strongly retards the free radical polymerization of vinyl acetate initiated by azobisisobutyronitrile. The chain transfer constant, estimated from rate data, is 0.020 ± 0.004 at 35°C and does not vary significantly with temperature. Molecular weight data lead to transfer constants of 0.023, 0.020, and 0.024 at 35, 45, and 55°C, respectively. A mean kinetic isotope effect of 9.8 ± 1.0 is observed for the phenol deuterated at the OH group, showing that the main attack of poly(vinyl acetate) radicals on the phenol involves hydrogen abstraction from this group. The activation energy for hydrogen abstraction is estimated to be 7.8 kcal/mole, and the rate constant at 50°C is 160 ± 40 1./mole-sec. The stationary concentration of 4-methyl-2,6-di-tert-butylphenoxyl in the polymerization mixture is proportional to the phenol concentration and is independent of the initiator concentration, as shown by electron spin resonance studies. Cross termination of poly(vinyl acetate) and phenoxy radicals occurs to a greater extent than mutual termination of these radicals. The rate constant for cross termination is close to 1 × 108 1./mole-sec at 50°C; the activation energy for cross termination is 2.9 ± 1.3 kcal/mole.

Notizen: Acrylonitrile (AN) was graft-polymerized onto gelatinized cationic starch (CS) possessing diethylaminoethyl ether groups by cerium (IV) initiation to give stable latexlike copolymer dispersions. Dispersions of the latex copolymers, having up to 50% grafted polyacrylonitrile (PAN), air- and heat-dry on glass to clear, adhesive films. Sonification of up to 8% dispersions at 20 Khz reduced their viscosities from 1500-3000 cP to 15-40 cP. Scanning electron microscopy revealed that both nonsonified and sonified dispersions consist of ball-like particles measuring about 0.05-0.15 μ in diameter when dry. The films are formed by coalescence of these particles. The degree to which AN grafts onto CS at ambient temperature is related to the nitrogen content of CS, gelatinization time of CS at 95°C, sequence of AN and cerium(IV) addition, concentration of cerium (IV), concentration of AN, and severity of reaction agitation. Number-average molecular weight values of PAN were about 106 when grafting was conducted under stirring and about 5 × 105 when conducted under shaking action.

Notizen: The effect of gas-phase singlet molecular oxygen (1ΔO2) upon several solid polymers was investigated by using electron paramagnetic resonance, infrared spectroscopy, and chemical detection techniques. The study was performed by use of 1ΔO2 produced by microwave discharge. The application of this method to polymer studies was closely examined. The saturated-chain polymers polystyrene, polyurethane, and polyethylene were found to be inert within the experimental conditions to reaction with 1ΔO2, while the unsaturated polymers cis-polybutadiene, trans-polybutadiene, and trans-polyisoprene were found to react quite readily in an apparently surface or near-surface limited reaction to produce hydroperoxide and/or peroxide groups. The introduction by homogeneous mixing of some known metal-chelate 1ΔO2 quenchers into the polymer trans-polyisoprene appeared to significantly decrease the rate of oxidation observed.

Beschreibung: The evolution of the Venus small-scale waves as they propagate into the nightsite is examined, and the small-scale structures are compared with the waves in the three components of the magnetic field, magnetic dip angle, and neutral density. It is demonstrated that the small-scale fluctuations evolve between the transterminator and antisolar regions. It is shown that atmospheric gravity waves may also be producing some of the fluctuations observed at longer wavelengths. The electron temperature and density are shown to be approximately 180 deg out of phase and exhibiting the highest correlation of any pair of variables. Waves in the electron and neutral densities are found to be correlated moderately on most orbits, while the average electron temperature is higher when the average magnetic field is more horizontal.

Beschreibung: The International Jupiter Watch is a program for the encouragement and coordination of the study of temporal variations in the Jovian system. It consists of six discipline working groups concerned with: the Io torus under N. Schneider; the Jovian atmosphere under R. West; the magnetosphere and radio emissions under I. de Peter and M. Klein; aurora under J. Caldwell; the Galilean satellites under W. Sinton and J. Goguen; and laboratory measurement and theory under B. Lutz. To date the IJW has held two workshops and selected several Jupiter Watch periods for coordinated observations. The next Jupiter Watch workshop is tentatively scheduled for 1990 in association with the next COSPAR meeting.

Beschreibung: Because it is energetically easier to get material from the Moon to Earth orbit than from the Earth itself, the Moon is a potentially valuable source of materials for use in space. The unique conditions on the Moon, such as vacuum, absence of many reagents common on the Earth, and the presence of very nontraditional ores suggest that a unique and nontraditional process for extracting materials from the ores may prove the most practical. With this in mind, an investigation of unfluxed silicate electrolysis as a method for extracting oxygen, iron, and silicon from lunar regolith was initiated and is discussed. The advantages of the process include simplicity of concept, absence of need to supply reagents from Earth, and low power and mass requirements for the processing plant. Disadvantages include the need for uninterrupted high temperature and the highly corrosive nature of the high-temperature silicate melts which has made identifying suitable electrode and container materials difficult.

Beschreibung: The numerical investigation of the Orszag-Tang vortex system in compressible magnetofluids will consider initial conditions with embedded supersonic regions. The simulations have initial average Mach numbers 1.0 and 1.5 and beta 10/3 with Lundquist numbers 50, 100, or 200. The behavior of the system differs significantly from that found previously for the incompressible and subsonic analogs. Shocks form at the downstream boundaries of the embedded supersonic regions outside the central magnetic X-point and produce strong local current sheets which dissipate appreciable magnetic energy. Reconnection at the central X-point, which dominates the incompressible and subsonic systems, peaks later and has a smaller impact as M increases from 0.6 to 1.5. Similarly, correlation between the momentum and magnetic field begins significant growth later than in subsonic and incompressible flows. The shocks bound large compression regions, which dominate the wavenumber spectra of autocorrelations in mass density, velocity, and magnetic field.

Beschreibung: The Pioneer Venus Orbiter has shown that the ionosphere of Venus is often filled with filamentary magnetic fields. These magnetic flux tubes apparently are created at the ionopause in the subsolar region and sink to low altitudes. As they sink they twist and compress, maintaining about the same magnetic flux, 2 to 3 Webers, until they sink below 175 km. Ropes also appear to become kink unstable at about 200 km generating spatial helices. These 3-dimensional structures can lead to increased interaction between flux ropes.
