Notes: The success of material implants in the vascular system has been limited by the fact that the intial events of blood coagulation on foreign material surfaces are not understood. Many materials have been evaluated in the search for a suitable implant material in this system. Recent success of porous ceramic materials in bone-ceramic compatibility studies stimulated the feeling that these materials should be tested in other body tissues such as the blood.Ceramic disks of Al2O3 and TiO2 were evaluated using a contact angle measurement technique to determine the characteristics of these material surfaces before and after exposure to a blood environment. This technique involved measuring the contact angle of sessile drops of various liquids on these surfaces with a microscope fitted with a goniometer eyepiece. By plotting these contact angles according to the procedure of Zisman, the characteristics of the surfaces could be evaluated. The clean ceramic disks were found to be extremely wettable even after exposure to a physiological saline environment. On exposure of these disks to a blood environment, it was observed that some type of film was adsorbed from the blood onto the ceramic surface during the initial minutes of exposure. This film had wetting characteristics consistent with layers of fibrinogen.

Notes: The trachea is a rather simple structure, and partly because of this simplicity, many attempts have been made to effect replacement with various types of prosthetic tubes. Unfortunately, the basic design of the trachea is not easily duplicated, and thus far there is no completely satisfactory prosthetic replacement. A series of porous and non-porous ceramics implanted in muscle tissue of rabbits indicated that rigid, porous materials can be compatible with soft, viable tissue. A prosthesis of porous ceramic rings and alternate bands of Dacron mesh was constructed and employed to bridge 6-cm defects created in the tracheas of mongrel dogs. After 6 months an asymptomatic animal was sacrificed. Firm fixation was accomplished and the lumen was completely patent, but histological sections demonstrated that ingrowth and scarring did not satisfactorily contain bacterial infection. Encouragement of epithelial regeneration or some artificial barrier is necessary for successful implants. Work in progress includes devices using both methods to provide this barrier.

Notes: The linear dichroism induced in a solution of electrically anisotropic molecules by a pulsed electric field has been studied. Equations have been obtained which express the dichroism as a function of dipole moment, excess polarizability, field strength, and the angle α between the dipole moment and the transition moment for the absorption band. These expressions have been related to the experimentally observed difference signal in such a way that when the dichroism is measured as a function of field strength the permanent moment, excess polarizability and angle a can be determined.Experiments have been carried out on tobacco mosaic virus (TMV), which is similar in its properties to the theoretical model. The polarizability anisotropy and rotary diffusion constant for the monomer and dimer of TMV have been obtained from these experiments. In addition to the molecular parameters mentioned above, the saturated electric dichroism of the virus was measured as a function of wave length and the presence of an n-π* transition in the tryptophan spectrum was indicated.Further experiments measuring dichroism as a function of pH demonstrated the general denaturation of the virus at high pH (10-11) but also the existence of a stable fraction which is not fragmented even at the high pH involved.

Notes: A simple, moderately high shear capillary viscometer which can be used up to a shear rate of 150,0000 sec-1 is described. The use of a twin viscometer arrangement has eliminated the need of elaborate pressure control and adjustment units. Experimental results obtained by use of the viscometer to measure the specific viscosities of a charged colloid at two different shear rates are presented.

Notes: Solutions (0.5% by weight) of two high molecular weight drag-reducing polymers, a polyethylene oxide and an acrylamide copolymer having anionic functionality, were prepared under low and high shear conditions. Rheological measurements demonstrated that high shear preparation causes a decrease in the size of the polymer units, the effect being markedly greater for the polyethylene oxide. These solutions were diluted to 25 ppm and drag reduction measured in 0.047-in. and 0.93-in. diameter test sections. The method of solution preparation showed no significant effect in the small tube measurements. In the large tube, however, low shear solution preparation led to drag reductions comparable to those found in the small tube, while high shear preparation gave markedly lower drag reductions. These results are discussed in terms of polymer supermolecular structure.

Notes: Mass spectra of 4-trifluoromethylpteridine and nine of its derivatives are recorded. Electron impact induced fragmentations of 4-trifluoromethylpteridine and its 2-chloro-, 7-methyl- and 6, 7-dimethyl-derivatives resemble those of pteridine and simple methylpteridines except that loss of a trifluoromethyl radical usually intervenes at some stage. Fragmentation of 4-trifluoromethyl-pteridine derivatives with an amino, substituted-amino, alkoxy or alkylthio group in the 2-position fragment by a variety of mechanisms. Accurate mass measurements and deuterium labelling were used to help elucidate some fragmentation pathways.

Description: Balloon-measured electric-field data for five-hour periods during each of 19 substorms near local midnight have been analyzed and averaged. Results are applied to an improved model of the magnetospheric substorm in which the origin of the electric fields, the flow of cold plasma and magnetic-field lines, and many observed particle phenomena are more naturally explained.
