    Notes: Abstract Diffusion galvanizing of brasses (L-62, L-68, and LS-59-1) offers a means of producing zinc-rich diffused coatings whose microhardness is 3–4 times higher than that of a given brass. The wear resistance of surface coatings of this kind (measured against a hard steel disk under pressures of 30–450 g/mm2 and at a circular speed of 1.2 m/sec) is 5–10 times higher than that of uncoated brasses.

    Notes: A falling coaxial cylinder viscometer was used to measure the melt flow behaviour of a commercial polystyrene with Mw 260,000. The shear stress region extended down to 0.6 × 104 dynes/cm2 and shear rates were as low as 3 × 10-2 sec-1 at 186°C. The shear rate-shear stress plots were linear at low shear stresses with slopes (differential viscosities) of 3.3 × 105 poises at total shear less than 120 units and decreasing differential viscosity with higher total shear. The flow curves at relatively low total shear were initially dilatant and became pseudoplastic with increasing shear stress. The inflection point represents a Newtonian apparent viscosity, which agrees fairly well with literature values for polystyrenes of the same Mw. Newtonian apparent viscosity is characteristic of a point value of shear stress and shear rate and is not necessarily a plateau region. Observation of a Newtonian region with decreasing shear stress or shear rate does not prove that this flow regime persists unchanged to zero values of the experimental parameter. The existence and magnitude of the Newtonian apparent viscosity reflects shear history of the polymer as well as its constitution and molecular weight distribution.

    Notes: Molecular weights of six bulk-process and five suspension-process PVC samples have been measured as part of a study aimed at developing a technique for gel permeation-chromatographic analysis of this polymer in tetrahydrofuran at room temperature. Osmometric M̄n values measured in cyclohexanone appear to be valid; the results are insensitive to thermal history or ultrasonic irradiation of the solution. Corresponding measurements in tetrahydrofuran changed with measurement temperature and indicated the presence of stable supermolecular PVC aggregates in this solvent. Such aggregates can be dispersed by ultrasonic treatment of the solution for brief periods. Simultaneous degradation of PVC molecules appears to be prevented by addition of small concentrations of nonionic surfactant to the tetrahydrofuran solutions. Treated solutions are suitable for GPC analyses at ambient temperatures. The results of osmometry, light scattering, and GPC agreed well.

    Notes: The free-radical copolymerization of styrene and methacrylonitrile was studied in toluene solution at 60, 90, and 120°C. Copolymer composition was estimated from gas-chromatographic measurement of unreacted monomer concentrations. Reactions were carried to about 20% conversion to minimize analytical errors. Reactivity ratios were calculated by using an integrated form of the Mayo-Lewis simple copolymerization equation. Reactivity ratios were not sensitive to reaction temperature. The values at 90°C are r1 = 0.41 (methacrylonitrile) and r2 = 0.37 (styrene). The r1 values are higher than those reported by other workers, presumably because of advantages in the present analytical technique and calculation method. The negligible temperature dependence of reactivity ratios is in accord with theory. If monomer pairs exhibit pronounced dependence of reactivity ratios on polymerization temperature, this may indicate a change in mode of placement of units in the polymer chain.

    Notes: Peak elution volume in gel-permeation analysis of polymers depends on sample concentration as well as molecular weight. Elution volume is related to the logarithm of the hydrodynamic volume of the solvated polymer species. The hydrodynamic volume of a given species is, in turn, inversely related to the concentration. Since molecular weight and concentration are interacting variables, the elution volume-molecular weight relation is not uniquely determined. A model is presented which accounts quantitatively for concentration effects, using parameters which are available a priori. The data required are polymer molecular weight, concentration, and density and the Mark-Houwink relation for the particular polymer-solvent combination.
