Description: The design, construction, testing, calibration, flight performance and flight data of an Ebert ultraviolet spectrometer are described which is an accurate representation of the conceptual design of the Apollo 17 UV spectrometer. The instrument was flown in an Aerobee 350 rocket from Wallops Island, Va., at 7:10 p.m. EDT on June 10, 1971 to an altitude of 328 km with a solar elevation angle of about 11 deg.

Description: A final contract for development, fabrication, test and flight of the ultraviolet spectrometer experiment on an Apollo space mission is reported. Two interface control documents were completed and signed off and three more were essentially completed. Supporting preliminary concepts formulation, design study and component investigation, specification and subcontract negotiation were accomplished.

Description: The table look-up approach is based on prestoring in fast, random-access, core memory the desired answer (e.g., crop-type) for all combinations of multispectral scanner outputs from selected channels. Specifically, each set of measurements from a given point on the ground is interpreted as that address in core memory where the answer can be retrieved. Substituting the simple retrieval operation for the length y computations required by the conventional approach offers two advantages: (1) the processing time is reduced by more than an order of magnitude; (2) the multispectral scanner data can be processed by computers having minimal sophistication, complexity, and cost. These two advantages may make it possible to use an onboard computer to perform the classification function in flight.

Description: Using a color-television display system and interactive graphics equipment on-line to an IBM 360/44 computer, investigators at the Manned Spacecraft Center have developed a variety of interactive displays which aid in analyzing remote sensor data. This paper describes how such interactive displays are used to: (1) analyze data from a multispectral scanner, (2) develop automatic pattern recognition systems based on multispectral scanner measurements, and (3) analyze data from nonimaging sensors such as the infrared radiometer and microwave scatterometer.

Description: Field studies of spills of Nos. 6 (Bunker C), 4, and 2 fuel oils and menhaden fish oil in the southern Chesapeake Bay have been supplemented with aerial photographic and multispectral scanner data. Thin films showed best in ultraviolet and blue bands and thick films in the green. Color film was effective for all thicknesses. Thermal infrared imagery provided clear detection, but required field temperature and thickness data to distinguish thickness/emissivity variations from temperature variations. Slick spreading rates agree with the theory of Fay (1969); further study of spreading is in progress.

Description: Description of a refractory metal thermocouple research program, directed towards establishing the parameters that are necessary to achieve reliable, long term, high temperature thermocouple performance. A description of special apparatus for exposing bare-wire thermoelements to high temperatures in vacuum and in high purity gaseous environments is given, and the design and performance of an ultra-high-vacuum, high-temperature furnace system are described. Bare-wire W-3 per cent Re and W-25 per cent Re thermoelements were exposed at 2400 K in argon, hydrogen, or vacuum, and experienced a shift in their emf-temperature relationship upon initial exposure. After the initial shift, the thermoelements exposed in the gaseous environments experienced no significant further change in their emf-temperature relationship for periods up to 1000 hrs. The thermoelements exposed in vacuum continually drifted in their emf-temperature relationship as a result of the preferential loss of Re by evaporation.

Description: A magnetic recording and magneto-optic playback system is disclosed wherein thermomagnetic recording is employed. A transparent isotropic film is heated along a continuous path by a focused laser beam. As each successive area of the path is heated locally to the vicinity of its Curie point in the presence of an applied magnetic field, a magneto-optic density is established proportional to the magnetic field and fixed in place as the area cools once the laser beam moves on to an adjacent area. To play back the recorded data, the intensity of the laser beam is reduced to avoid reaching the vicinity of the Curie point of the film as it is scanned by the laser beam in the same manner as for recording. A Faraday effect analyzer and photo detector are employed as a transducer for producing an output signal.
