    Notes: The thermal bulk polymerization of cholesteryl acrylate was carried out in the solid phase, the mesomorphic phase, and the liquid phase to study the effect of monomer ordering on polymerization rate and polymer properties. The rate increased with decreasing ordering (or enhanced mobility) of the monomer. Formation of inhibitive by-products during the polymerization limited conversions to 35%. The sedimentation constant S0 = 6.2 S was the same for the polymers obtained in the three phases. The weight-average molecular weight (M̄w) was 480,000 as determined by ultracentrifugation. Poly-(cholesteryl acrylate) formed in bulk is randomly coiled when dissolved in tetrahydrofuran. The thermal properties of the monomer are given.

    Notes: Electron microscopic observations on the mechanically undisturbed guinea pig bone marrow show that the sinusoidal lining is continuous. There are neither intercellular nor intracellular apertures allowing free communication between the extravascular and intravascular compartments. A transient migration pore is only formed during the diapedetic transit of blood cells. Serial sections show that this aperture is transcellular. A functional continuity of the sinusoidal lining appears to be maintained during the diapedesis of blood cells, which is evident from the absence of a significant extravascular leakage of plasma during this process.

    Notes: Examination of the cardiac anatomy of lizards of the family Varanidae revealed that much of the previous literature contained basic errors both in description and interpretation. These are corrected and terminology of various authors is standardized.The varanid ventricle is similar to that of most other lizards in not being elongated, in having the base at right angles to the longitudinal axis, and in having the vertical septum weakly developed. However, it is not a typical lacertilian heart in that it has a number of characteristic ophidian features such as a muscular cone surrounding the cavum latero-dorsale and a prominent twisting of the cava. It lacks a gubernaculum cordis and a cartilaginous rod in the septum aortico-pulmonale, both of which are present in many non-varanid lizards, but seldom occur in snakes. The location of the heart is more posterior in the body than is true of other lizards.

    Notes: A line of cells, positive for glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase activity, has been separated from a negative parental stock derived from the H4-II-E-C3 rat hepatoma line. Cytogenetic analyses showed specific marker chromosomes of the parent line were present in the variant. On the other hand, cells of the variant line contained three chromosomes less, on the average, than the total present in parent cells. Karyotypic analyses indicated the diminution in chromosome numbers to be in the subacrocentric group. The appearance of glucose-6-phosphate dehydrogenase associated with loss of chromosomes suggests this enzyme is suppressed or under negative control in the parental stock. The consistent loss of chromosomes of the subacrocentric group suggests that the locus bearing regulatory activity is in this specific group.

    Notes: In Stentor, the changes in macronuclear morphology which occur during oral differentiation are known to be regulated by a corresponding series of cytoplasmic changes. The present experiments were designed to determine whether these changes are transmitted to the nucleus through the endoplasm or through the cortex. When two stentors in different stages of regeneration are grafted together, they normally become synchronized with respect to macronuclear behavior. The experimental results described in this paper show that the stimulus responsible for synchronizing the nuclei of such graft complexes is transmitted with greatly decreased efficiency when the two graft components are separated by a continuous barrier of reversed cortex but share a common endoplasm. When the cortical barrier is incomplete, nuclear synchronization almost always occurs. These findings indicate that the cytoplasmic signals regulating macronuclear morphology are transmitted to the nucleus from the cortex; they further suggest that the synchronizing stimulus travels through the cell membrane rather than the cortical fibrillar system and that it is not released into the endoplasm but acts on the subcortically located macronucleus at close range.

    Notes: A study has been made of the crosslinking of linear polyethylene in solution. Networks containing a low number of trapped entanglements and elastically ineffective chain ends were prepared by crosslinking high molecular weight linear polyethylene in 1,2,4-trichlorobenzene solutions with dicumyl peroxide at 120°C. No syneresis was observed during crosslinking except at high peroxide concentrations. The networks were characterized by swelling measurements, infrared spectroscopy, and differential scanning calorimetry. The crosslinking efficiency, calculated from swelling, was found to be proportional to the square of the polymer volume fraction. The proportionality constant was 0.8, indicating close to unit efficiency for undiluted polymer.Chemical modification of the polyethylene chains by attachment of peroxide and solvent fragments was of the order of one foreign unit per elastically active network chain, depending on peroxide and polymer concentration. Sol-gel analysis indicated that no chain scission occurred. These results are shown to be consistent with a “cage” mechanism for crosslinking. The possible topological consequence of this mechanism, preferential crosslinking of entanglements, is discussed. The concentration of trapped entanglements was also found to be proportional to the square of the polymer volume fraction. The proportionality constant corresponds to a molecular weight between entanglements of 4000 for the undiluted polymer, which is close to the value of 4200 found for networks prepared from the undiluted polymer. Since the results obtained are based mainly on the use of the swelling equation, different aspects of the applicability of this equation for the evaluation of the crosslinking process are discussed. As regards the reference dimensions, which should be known for a quantitative application of the elastic theory, the results strongly support the use of the dimensions of the network chains after completion of crosslinking.

    Notes: Hydrido pentacyanocobaltate(III) and alkyl pentacyanocobaltate(III) have been studied as initiators for the polymerization of isoprene and butadiene in aqueous emulsion systems. The microstructure of the polymers is consistent with a free radical process. Other transition metal hydrides are relatively ineffective as polymerization initiators or act as inhibitors for the radical polymerization of the same dienes.

    Description: The results are discussed of a high-precision laboratory determination of the rotational constants and transition frequencies in the ground vibrational state of the linear molecule cyanoacetylene, discovered in the direction of the galactic center by Turner (1971). The values obtained make it possible to determine more precisely the interstellar cyanoacetylene velocities and to simplify the identification of additional interstellar rotational transitions.
