Notes: Experimental results are presented for saturated nucleate and film pool boiling heat transfer to ethane, ethylene, and three binary ethane-ethylene mixtures containing approximately 25, 50, and 75 mole % ethylene. Data were obtained at reduced pressures from 0.05 to 0.75. The nucleate boiling data are compared with several predictions; the film boiling data are favorably compared with the Sciance, Colver, and Sliepcevich correlation.

Notes: Microemulsions, which are optically transparent oil-water dispersions, were spontaneously produced upon mixing hexadecane, hexanol, potassium oleate, and water in specific proportions. The viscosity of the microemulsions was measured for several water/oil ratios including the phase-inversion region. The striking optical and viscosity changes observed at specific water/oil ratios were in agreement with the proposed mechanism of phase-inversion, namely, water spheres → water cylinders → water lammellae → continuous water phase, for this system. In the phase-inversion region, the dispersion exhibited birefringence and rheopectic properties. An extremely high viscosity (〉 100,000 cps) exhibited by the dispersions between water/oil ratios of 2.0 and 3.5 were explained in terms of ion-dipole association between oleate and hexanol molecules on adjacent droplets.

Notes: Experimental studies were performed with low density polyethylene, acrylonitrile-butadiene-styrene polymers and on polyvinyl chloride to elucidate the nature of the plasticating process in a reciprocating-screw injection molding machine. Melting data, obtained by use of the “cooling experiment,” and plastic temperature data reveal that the screw recharge process is a transient plasticating extrusion process which gradually approaches the equilibrium extrusion behavior as the screw rotates. If the screw rotation time is a high percentage of the total cycle time, the plasticating behavior is very similar to steady-state extrusion behavior, but if the screw rotation time is a small percentage of the total cycle time, the plasticating behavior is significantly different. Furthermore, better plasticating is obtained by use of a low RPM and high percentage rotation time than by a high RPM and low percentage rotation time.

Notes: A class of negative electron-beam resists is described which have excellent lithographic characteristics. The resists are copolymers of glycidyl methacrylate and ethyl acrylate. Their molecular weights, epoxy contents, and polydispersivities can be controlled to give an adjustable range of electron sensitivity and contrast. The copolymers are compared to other epoxy containing, negative electron-beam resists.Micrography of resist profiles generated from a single line scan of the electron beam have been used to illustrate the complex interaction of accelerating voltage of the electron beam and resist contrast on resolution. Optical gratings made from single line scans of the beam have feature sizes less than 300 nm in the resist, etched metals, and dielectrics.

Notes: Fatigue tests under reversed tension-compression have been made on polystyrene specimens in both the unnotched and notched condition. For the notched specimens subject to a stress amplitude of 2500 psi, the log of the fatigue life was found to be a linear function of the log of the notch size. From the data, it was possible to determine an inherent flaw size for polystyrene subject to alternating loading and this value is compared to corresponding values obtained from static tests. Fracture surfaces were examined by scanning electron microscopy and the changes produced by notching are discussed.

Notes: An analysis is made of the Van der Waals forces of two different species when separated by a third continuous component. Results show that under certain circumstances, attractions as well as repulsions can exist between the two different species. The theory is applied to a fibrous bed coalescer to determine what type of material would best serve as a coalescence medium.
