Notes: Poly(ethylene terephthalate) oxidizes on being heated in air at elevated temperatures to form a crosslinked structure. The crosslinking occurs through a reaction which causes arylation of terephthalate rings to form a biphenyltricarboxylic acid derivative. This reaction is interpreted as a free-radical cleavage generating a substituted phenyl radical which selectively attaches to a terephthalate residue via substitution.

Notes: High conversions of oligomeric silazanes that are not volatile at 200°C/0.1 mm are obtained when hexamethylcyclotrisilazane or octamethylcyclotetrasilazane is heated with a molar deficiency of dichlorodimethylsilane at 175°C. The oligomers, which show moderate solvolytic stability, contain disilazane, trisilylamine, and cyclodisilazane units. They are structurally similar to materials that have been prepared by others from hexamethylcyclotrisilazane and ammonium bromide. When the oligomers are treated with ammonia and heated to 325°C, evidence can be found in their spectra for the presence of oligocyclodisilazane structures.

Description: Following the establishment of the overall transport concept, a study of all of the life limiting constraints associated with the transport were analyzed using modeling techniques. These design techniques included: (1) a response analysis from which the performance of the transport could be determined under operating conditions for a variety of conceptual variations both in a new and aged condition; (2) an analysis of a double cone guidance technique which yielded an optimum design for maximum guidance with minimum tape degradation; (3) an analysis of the tape pack design to eliminate spoking caused by negative tangential stress within the pack; (4) an evaluation of the stress levels experienced by the magnetic tape throughout the system; (5) a general review of the bearing and lubrication technology as applied to satellite recorders and hence the recommendation for using standard load carrying antifriction ball bearings; and (6) a kinetic analysis to determine the change in kinetic properties of the transport during operation.

Description: Description of an analytically obtained optimum adaptive delta modulator-demodulator configuration. The device utilizes two past samples to obtain a step size which minimizes the mean square error for a Markov-Gaussian source. The optimum system is compared, using computer simulations, with a linear delta modulator and an enhanced Abate delta modulator. In addition, the performance is compared to the rate distortion bound for a Markov source. It is shown that the optimum delta modulator is neither quantization nor slope-overload limited. The highly nonlinear equations obtained for the optimum transmitter and receiver are approximated by piecewise-linear equations in order to obtain system equations which can be transformed into hardware. The derivation of the experimental system is presented.

Description: Fourteen C-130 airplane center wings which had experienced from approximately 4,000 to 13,000 hours of flight service and its associated fatigue damage were tested to destruction, seven in upbending and seven in downbending. Six wings were tested directly for static residual strength in the fatigue-damaged condition as received from field service. The other eight wings were tested in crack propagation cyclic testing at a prescribed stress level for a maximum of 10,000 cycles. Then the stress level was reduced and testing was continued up to a maximum of 20,000 total cycles. Cyclic testing was performed with constant-amplitude stresses at a stress ratio of +0.1. Maximum cyclic skin stresses were approximately 18,000 psi. At the conclusion of cyclic testing, a static test to destruction was conducted to determine the residual strength of each fatigue-damaged specimen.
