    Notes: The low resolution and complete high resolution mass spectra of a series of methyl and deuterium substituted bicyclo[4.1.0]heptane-2-one derivatives have been measured. An attempt has been made to test the operation of a fragmentation process analogous to the known photochemical rearrangement, and to determine if the substitution effects critical to the photorearrangement also influence the electron-impact process. The fragmentation pattern of these conjugated cyclopropyl ketones is detailed and the influence of the cyclopropyl ring is discussed. It is suggested that electron-impact-induced rearrangements which are analogous to photochemical transformations will be relatively low energy processes and will remain prominent at low ionizing voltages.

    Notes: Aus mehreren Chemiebetrieben sind Unfälle bekannt geworden, die sich beim Filtrieren lösungsmittelhaltiger Suspensionen und beim Ausschälen von Filterkuchen in Siebzentrifugen ereigneten. Nach einer Beschreibung der möglichen Explosionsgefahren werden verschiedene Sicherheitsmaßnahmen auf ihre Eignung für Siebzentrifugen untersucht. Auf die Methode der Inertgas-Absicherung mit dauernder Sauerstoff-Messung wird näher eingegangen. Die Untersuchungen beziehen sich im wesentlichen auf Dreisälen-Pendelzentrifugen mit Oben- oder Untenentleerung sowie auf horizontale Schälzentrifugen.

    Notes: Glucoamylase bound to DEAE-cellulose in 0.05 M sodium acetate, pH 4.0, is active in the conversion of starch to glucose. The activity of the DEAE-cellulose-bound enzyme ranges from 16 to 55% of the activity of the free enzyme. Binding of the enzyme narrows the pH optimum to approximately 4.0 and lowers the temperature optimum to 40-50°C as compared to a 60°C temperature optimum for the free enzyme. Concentrations of acetate buffer above 0.1 M disrupt the DEAE-cellulose-enzyme complex. Columns were used with some success for the continuous conversion of starch. Pretreatment of the starch with α-amylase and clarification were necessary to prevent blocking of the column. Columns maintained activity for more than 3 weeks of continuous operation.

    Notes: Bei der Chromatographie in Temperatur- und Druckbereichen in der Nähe des kritischen Punktes der mobilen Phase wird aufgrund der starken intermolekularen Wechselwirkung zwischen den einzelnen Komponenten des zu trennenden Gemisches und der mobilen Phase die Flüchtigkeit der Analysensubstanzen beträchtlich erhöht. Hierdurch ist es möglich, auch hochsiedende Substanzgemische zu trennen, die bei der normalen Niederdruck-Gaschromatographie zu lange Elutionszeiten und für eine Nachweisbarkeit zu geringe Konzentrationen im Trägergas haben. Die Einflüsse von Druck, Temperatur und Art der mobilen und stationären Phasen auf den Trenneffekt werden diskutiert und an Beispielen erläutert.

    Notes: The objective of this study was to determine the feasibility of using a fluorocarbon liquid in a liquid-liquid contacting device for extracorporeal blood oxygenation. Extraction experiments were carried out wherein blood was gently contacted with FC-43 (a fluorinated tributyl amine) for up to 48 hr. The fluorocarbon caused no significant change in red cell volume, white cell count, plasma hemoglobin, platelet count, plasma fibrinogen, or the relative amounts of thirteen different plasma proteins. To determine toxicity, FC-43 slugs and emulsions were injected intravenously and intraaortically into dogs. No chemical toxicity has been found, but the fluorocarbon is intolerable above about 1.7 mg/kg because it retards the flow of blood through pulmonary capillaries. FC-43 was used for several in vivo tests of a vertical cylindrical blood oxygenator. The hemolysis caused by the falling film of fluorocarbon on the inner Teflon wall of the cylinder was considerably less than that caused by direct contact between blood and Teflon, suggesting that the blood-fluorocarbon interface is quite atraumatic. All these results indicate that this fluorocarbon liquid holds considerable promise for use in a liquid-liquid blood oxygenator.

    Notes: The mass spectral fragmentation of a number of specially synthesized amino esters and ketones has been studied in which the distance between the two functionalities has been varied. The principal fragments formed following initial ionization are the even-electron immonium ions a and b. Further fragmentation of ion a in the amino esters occurs via non-specific processes. Therefore it is difficult to establish the degree of mobility of the positive charge in the fragment ions, notably whether the species with the charge present on the oxygen atom makes a significant contribution to the fragmentation. The β-(IIb) and γ-(IV) amino ketones show no McLafferty rearrangements after α-fission, thus demonstrating that uncoupling of the carbonyl π electrons is not a feasible trigger in lieu of charge localization.

    Notes: Low resolution mass spectrometric studies were carried out on biphenyl, the 2-, 3- and 4-methyl substituted biphenyls, the 2,2′-, 2,3′-, 2,4′-, 3,3′-, 3,4′- and 4,4′- dimethyl substituted biphenyls, in addition to diduryl. Number and position of the methyl substituent have a marked effect on the observed fragmentation. In biphenyl and the monomethyl series [M - 1] is a major fragment whereas in the dimethyl series and diduryl the [M - 15] represents a significant ion species. A methyl located in the ortho position results in the greatest influence on the cracking pattern. Potential mechanisms are discussed.

    Notes: The mass spectra of fifteen β-carbolines have been interpreted and proposed fragmentations have been substantiated by means of deuterium-labeling and accurate mass determinations. Most decompositions were predictable. An interesting fragmentation was observed in the spectra of 1-alkyl-1,2,3,4-tetrahydro-β-carbolines, which rearrange to expel an alkylamino (RNH) radical from the molecular ion.
