The factors leading to substituent effects on the electron distribution in aromatic molecules are discussed, particular attention being paid to the π-electron system. IR spectroscopy has proved an extremely useful probe in this field of study. Substituent d-orbital participation and the relevance of the π-inductive effects are also considered.
