    Notes: A general means is proposed for predicting transitional velocity patterns in concentric annuli and between parallel plates from behavior in tubes. As in laminar and turbulent flow, transformations of space coordinates yield identical profiles under specific conditions of comparison. Predictions are confirmed by published data and can be related to recent theoretical proposals.

    Notes: A statistical study was conducted to determine the significance of the sources of variability in the laboratory (carbon arc) weathering of a light-stabilized polyester resin system. Color fastness of the resin was evaluated in terms of changes in total color, lightness, and chromaticity. Factors that significantly influenced the results were variability within castings and between batches of resin, location of the specimen within the exposure apparatus, and the storage time prior to testing. The carbon arc instrument provided a relatively insensitive test for evaluating a light-stabilized polymer system, chiefly because, with a stable polymer, small random variations in response become almost equal to the small change in color developed on exposure.

    Notes: The buoyant density of T-4 DNA was determined by equilibrium sedimentation in a density gradient, of mixed solutions of cesium and magnesium chlorides and bromides. The preferential hydration was calculated from these data, allowing appropriately for the exchange equilibrium of DNA with Cs+ and Mg++ ions. The charge and intrinsic solvation of the counterions were found to have no appreciable effect on the hydration of the DNA, the extent of solvation depending only on the thermodynamic, activity of the water. Various reasonable hypotheses are discussed to account for these results.

    Notes: The nonbonded interaction energy of disaccharides, mannobiose and galactobiose and polysaccharides mannan and galactan have been computed as a function of dihedral angles (φ,ψ). The conformation (40°, -20°) has been preferred for the mannan chain from nonbonded interaction energy considerations. The O5…O3′ type of intramolecular hydrogen bond has been found to be possible in the above conformation. Comparison of the allowed region of mannan with those of cellulose and xylan indicates that the monomer unit, in mannan chain has slightly higher freedom of rotation than that of cellulose and less than that of xylan. As in cellulose and mannan, the freedom of rotation of the monomer units in β-1,4′ galactan is highly restricted. Unlike mannan (which prefers an extended conformation) the β-1,4′ galactan prefers a helical conformation similar to amylose. Just as in amylose the O2…O3′ type hydrogen bond between contiguous residues is also possible in β-1,4′ galactan.

    Notes: The failure criterion for amorphous polymers relating hysteresis at break with energy input to failure in tensile stress-strain tests was found to be obeyed only at very high or very low temperatures in natural rubber. Tensile results between about 80°C and 130°C show a high degree of scatter, and this behavior is attributed to the ability of natural rubber to crystallize at high strains. The modification of tensile properties by the addition of carbon black in natural rubber is also discussed and compared with published results from SBR. The effect of changing the degree of crosslinking on the failure properties in both dicumyl peroxide and sulfur-cured vulcanizates of natural rubber is also considered. It is found that differences in failure properties can be accounted for by the use of a crosslinking parameter from simple rubber elasticity theory in some of the failure equations.

    Notes: A computerized method has been developed for the analysis of the behavior of a sealed joint. The method is based upon the use of fundamental time-dependent mechanical properties of a polymeric sealant, which can be easily determined in the laboratory, to feed a digital computer program that performs internal force balances within a given joint seal configuration by dividing the joint seal into a large number of “finite elements” in which the sealant properties are invariant. The computational method is an outgrowth of stress analysis programs that have been developed for use in the study of stress distributions within solid rocket propellant “grains.” Output from the computer program consists of a prediction of the overall geometric deformation of the sealant and the distribution of stresses and strains within the joint seal. Essential to the ideologic development of this method is the “separability” of time-dependent and strain-dependent aspects of the behavior of the material properties. However, the method should be operable even when this “separability” is only approximately maintained, as in many real materials. Fundamental properties have been determined on several typical sealant materials. A description is given of the mode of operation of the computational method, but detailed results are given in a companion article.

    Notes: The microbiological extraction of zinc from a high-grade zinc sulfide concentrate has been investigated, using a pure strain of Thiobacillus ferrooxidans. Conditions such as temperature, pH, pulp density, nutrient, concentration, and specific surface of solids have been studied in terms of their effects on zinc extraction rate and in some instances on final zinc concentration in solution. Where appropriate, optimum conditions for leaching have been specified.
