Notes: Tetrahymena of the T. pyriformis complex collected from varied habitats in Malaysia, Thailand, and The People's Republic of China include strains of the micronucleate species T. americanis and T. canadensis and the amicronucleate T. Pyriformis and T. elliotti. Two new breeding species are described—T. malaccensis from Malaysia and T. asiatica from China and Thailand. Two wild selfers from China and some of the amicronucleate strains from all three countries fall into isozymic groups similar to named micronucleate and amicronucleate species. The T. patula complex is represented by two groups of clones from Malaysia that fit the morphological description of T. vorax. They, however, have radically different isozymic electrophoretic patterns and both groups differ from those of previously described T. vorax. As their molecules indicate relationships to other “T. vorax” strains as distant as that between T. vorax and T. leucophrys, they are considered to be new species, T. caudata and T. silvana. A third new breeding species, T. nanneyi, was identified among strains previously collected in North America. Viable immature progeny were obtained from the new strains of the five breeding species. Maximum temperature tolerances were determined for the new strains of four of the breeding species.

Notes: Livingston data on expected inflation rates have been used extensively in the financial literature, especially in investgating the relationship between nominal interest rates and expected inflation rates; however, the data have not been subjected to a thorough analysis of forecast accuracy. The objective of this paper is to analyze the forecast properties of Livingston data using a wide variety of time and frequency domain methods over an extended sample period and for selected subperiods.

Notes: Zusammenfassung. Effects of the herbicides 2,4-D, aminotriazole, atrazine, chlorpropham and chlorflurenol on nucleic-acid biosynthesis in the ascomycete Neurospora crassaSummary. Biosynthesis of DNA and RNA was determined in Neurospora crassa wild race 3a6A grown in cultures containing 2,4-D, aminotriazole, atrazine, chlorpropham and chlorflurenol in concentrations of 10−3-10−6 M. In aerated culture, N. crassa was most sensitive to chlorpropham and at 10−3 M growth was completely inhibited. The greatest effect on nucleic-acid biosynthesis was given by 2,4-D at 10−3 M which increased the DNA value to 140% of the control. With atrazine at 10−3 M. protein synthesis in particular appeared to be stimulated, to almost 140% of the control. In general, the five herbicides studied had a relatively slight effect on nucleic-acid biosynthesis; only with the highest concentration of 10−3 M was the effect appreciable. N. crassa was not very susceptible to these herbicides.

Notes: In suspension cultured cells of Nicotiana tabacum L. cv. Wisconsin 38 the .concentration of 18 nucleotides and 3 nucleosides have been determined using a new procedure developed for the extraction, purification and HPLC separation of these compounds from plant tissue. The different nucleotide pools increase in size immediately at the onset of the batch culture and reach distinct maxima at the very beginning of the proliferative phase. The main component are the uracil nucleotides with UDP-sugars as the predominant fraction followed by the adenine nucleotides; the energy charge is maintained at a high and constant value throughout the whole culture time. During the growth interval the increases in the nucleotide pools reveal that the cell proliferation phase is followed by an extensive phase of cell elongation. Whereas the concentration of the total nucleotides varies by a factor of about 3 along the growth curve, the ratio of uracil to adenine nucleotides is kept fairly constant indicating regulatory mechanisms for correlation of the individual nucleotide pools.

Notes: Nocturnal acidity increases of the Crassulaceae acid metabolism succulent Agave salmiana Otto ex Salm. ssp. crassispina (Trel.) Gentry were determined for various photosynthetically active radiation (PAR) levels in the field and various day/night temperatures and soil water potentials in the laboratory. When a particular factor was optimal for nocturnal acid accumulation, it was assigned an index value of unity. The product of the three indices was termed the environmental productivity index (EPI), which summarizes the effect of PAR, temperature, and water status on nocturnal acid accumulation. A monthly value for EPI was determined using microclimatic conditions at the field site near Salinas de Hidalgo, San Luis Potosf, Mexico. EPI was highly correlated with the number of leaves unfolding monthly from plants in the field (r2= 0.95), where monitoring of such leaf unfolding is a non-destructive technique for assessing plant productivity. By using the measured leaf area index for four groups of A. salmiana and a relationship between acid accumulation and net CO2 up-take, the EPI acidity data were converted to dry weight gain per unit ground area. This measure of productivity closely agreed with the 1.05 kg m−2 year−1 determined by conventional harvesting techniques. The productivity is also in agreement with studies on other desert agaves, but about 10-fold higher than that generally considered for desert ecosystems.
