Notes: A neutron diffraction study of deuterated potassium ferrocyanide trihydrate (KFCT) has been made above the ferroelectric Curie temperature. The monoclinic form, space group A2/a (No. 15), has a = 9.42, b = 17.01, c = 9.38 Å, and β= 90.03° at 20°C. Since all of the large crystals of KFCT were twinned by a 90° rotation about the b axis, data from both overlapped and nonoverlapped reflections were used in the determination of the structure. Refinement by a modified least-squares method that accounted for the overlapped data led to a weighted R value on F2 (3678 reflections) of 4.8%. The corresponding R on F is 4.9%. The disordered water molecules are of two types: one is disordered into two positions related by a twofold axis parallel to b: the other is disordered into two positions that are related by an approximate 90° rotation in the plane of the molecule. Both types of water molecules show O–D ...O or O–D...N bonding. The Fe(CN)4−6 octahedra are regular and the potassium ions are loosely surrounded by O and N atoms. This analysis has elucidated the role of the water molecules in the ferroelectric switching mechanism. The [{\bar 1}01] ferroelectric axis in this crystal can be explained on the basis of the dipole moment and orientation of the water molecule dipoles.

Notes: The cryo-orienter is used for neutron diffraction studies of single crystals between liquid helium and room temperatures. It combines a double Dewar cryostat with a three-circle goniostat. The temperature of the crystal is controlled by a combination of exchange gas and a bridge circuit to a stability of ±0.01 Kelvin degree. A ring assembly allows the cryostat to be angularly displaced ±50° from vertical (χ), and to be rotated 360° (φ), which provides crystal motion about two axes with ±0.01° precision. The ring assembly can be rotated about the diffraction vector. Crystals can be mounted along a non-major zone and sufficient data can then be collected with one crystal mounting. The ARCADE computer system controls the entire data collection.

Description / Table of Contents: Summary The influence coefficients necessary for the balancing of flexible rotors can be determined with one single measuring run, if rotor vibrations are measured at different bearing stiffnesses. Experiments show good agreement with existing methods.

Notes: Abstract The transition between the motion of a subsurface buoyant jet and a supersurface buoyant jet has been studied. Measurements indicate that the transition region is sharp and characterized by an intermediate regime where both a wall-hugging flow and the more standard outlet flow are present. The point of transition was found to exhibit significant hysteresis depending on whether the receiving pool height was increasing or decreasing with time. Measurements of the temperature field downstream show that the effects of the different regimes on the density stratification can persist for long distances.

Notes: Abstract In order to study the ultrastructure of the cell surface and plasma membrane of Schizosaccharomyces pombe as a function of growth conditions we investigated exponential and stationary phase cells grown in rich and minimal medium. Electron microscopic preparation techniques based on rapid cryofixation (without cryoprotectants) were used. The intramembraneous aspects of the plasma membrane were described by freeze fracturing. For the first time the dynamic surface structures could be directly analyzed by freeze drying in the scanning electron microscope and in thin section of freeze substituted samples. This preparation techniques reveal hair-like structures on the surface of yeast cells. The hairs of cells grown in the rich medium are longer than those grown in the minimal medium. A mutant defective in the structure of a cell surface galactomannoprotein (acid phosphatase) reveals (under conditions of maximal acid phosphatase expression) a cell surface structure that differs from the wild type. It is likely that the hairs represent the peripheral galactomannan layer or part of it. On the membrane fracture faces the number, shape, distribution and state of aggregation of the intramembraneous particles are different between membranes of growing and non-growing cells and between cells grown under different physiological conditions. In the minimal medium corresponding periodical structures on the plasmic and exoplasmic fracture faces were observed, which clearly differ between exponential and stationary phase cells. The number, length and depth of plasma membrane invaginations increase as the cells go from the exponential phase to the stationary phase. Short and flattened invaginations are filled with thin periodic structures.

Notes: Abstract We analyse superspace constraints in a systematic way and define a set of natural constraints. We give a complete solution of the Bianchi identities subject to these constraints and obtain a reducible, but not fully reducible multiplet. By additional constraints it can be reduced to either the minimal, non minimal or new minimal multiplet. We discuss the superspace actions for the various multiplets.
