Beschreibung: The results of a statistical analysis of the vibrations of the experimental RS-1 reducer stand, with a spiral-gear transmission, operating on a closed circuit, are presented. The analysis was carried out on the Minsk-2 and Minsk-32 digital computers, with two-channel analog-digital converter, built in the Institute of the Science of Mechanics. Two-dimensional distribution patterns, conditional dispersions and dispersion ratios were calculated. The octave-band-filtered first harmonics of the tooth frequency f sub z of the vibrations at two different measurement points were considered as the components of the vibration process to be analyzed. The regression lines, corresponding to different values of the loading torque, are presented. Since it was not the gear drive parameters which were determined by diagnostic methods, but the characteristics most sensitive to change in state of the object of the investigation, the loading torque, which is the simplest and most accessible for measurement, was chosen as the condition parameter.

Beschreibung: To meet the life and reliability requirements of five to ten year space missions, a new solar array drive mechanism for 3-axis stabilized vehicles has been developed and is undergoing life testing. The drive employs a redundant lubrication system to increase its reliability. An overrunning clutch mechanism is used to permit block redundant application of two or more drives to a common array drive shaft. Two prototype actuator and clutch assemblies, in continuous vacuum life test under load at 10 to the minus 8th power torr for more than sixteen months, have each accumulated more than 34,000 output revolutions without anomaly, the equivalent of more than seven years of operation in a 1000 km orbit or nearly ninety-five years at synchronous altitude.

Beschreibung: The conception of a cable boom system for a scientific spin stabilized satellite led to a flat cable stowed on a drum with a flexlead without conversion to avoid slip rings and to facilitate automatic restowage from any state of deployment. Some dynamic features of the extended cable boom and especially the comparison between round and flat cables were investigated in a phenomenological study using a test rig capable of inducing lateral, torsional and thermal cycling disturbances separately or in any combination.

Beschreibung: Several boom arrangements were proposed for the Hawkeye spacecraft. The design chosen to fly consists of one pair of stem roll-out booms and a set of telescopic booms. Some of the advantages of choosing this boom configuration were that the booms could be stored in the belt line area, which is near the center of gravity of the spacecraft, and also with the approach the telescopic booms could be extended at the spacecraft's initial spin rate (180 rpm). By being able to extend these booms at the initial spin rate of the spacecraft the need for a despin system was eliminated, thus weight saving to the spacecraft. With the method of storage and extension employed by the telescopic design, the desirable sensor distance from the spacecraft could also be attained.

Beschreibung: One of the mechanisms that is included in the configuration of the Viking Mars Lander is an antenna dish deployment mechanism which utilizes a mechanical escapement device for controlling deployment. The criteria require that the mechanism be capable of deploying the antenna under a wide range of aiding and retarding winds after landing on Mars but must limit the acceleration during deployment and latching of the antenna. Adding to the complexity of the design are the requirements for very accurate alignment after erection and heat sterilization prior to launch. This mechanism has been designed, fabricated and successfully tested to qualification test levels for usage on the Viking mission.

Beschreibung: Four candidate lubricants for next generation aircraft gas turbine application were tested under open atmosphere conditions in a rig simulating an advanced engine 125 mm bore mainshaft thrust bearing position. Testing was conducted at speeds to 24,000 rpm (3,000,000 bearing DN), bearing ring temperature of 500 F, and with 1200 F air and 100 psi differential pressure across the seals installed in a dual tandem arrangement. Test bearing was a 125 mm bore split inner ring, outer race riding angular contact ball bearing under a 3280 lb. thrust load. One lubricant, a type 2 ester, performed extremely well. The mainshaft seal limited the performance. Numerous design improvements for this seal were indicated.

Beschreibung: Two four-pole Lundell-type rotors consisting of magnetic and nonmagnetic materials were fabricated by weld-depositing Inconel 625 between two sections of AISI 4617 steel. The rotors had a major diameter of 8.28 cm (3.26 in.). Saturation curves for load and no-load conditions with one of the rotors installed in a 1200-Hz Brayton-cycle research alternator are presented. The other identical rotor was spin-tested to a speed of 63,000 rmp, which was equal to 175 percent of the rated speed.
