    Notes: The osmotic pressure equation for nonideal, associating systems of the type nA +mB ⇄ AnBm, has been derived, by using the assumption yAnBm/yAnyBm = 1. This treatment can also be applied to related associations such as nA + mB ⇄ AB + AB2 + A2B + …. From osmotic pressure experiments on the pure reactants it is possible to obtain the molecular weights (MA and MB) of the reactants and also the virial coefficients (BAA and BBB) of the reactants. The osmotic pressure of a nonreacting mixture of A and B can be calculated from these measurements. It can be used along with osmotic pressure measurements on equilibrium mixtures of A and B to obtain expressions containing the equilibrium constant (or constants) and the cross-virial coefficients (BAB and BBA). Several procedures are described for the evaluation of the equilibrium constant (or constants) and the BAB or BBA terms. It appears that this procedure is a general one which is applicable to associations of the type nA + mB ⇄ AB + A2B + AB2 + …. By correcting for nonideal behavior, one should then be able to apply it to any method available for analyzing ideal associations of the types considered here. In addition it is possible, subject to certain restrictions, to analyze associations of the type 3A + B ⇄ A2 + AB.

    Notes: The influence of hydrogen bonding on the flow behavior of polymer melts at high shear rate has been investigated using a capillary extrusion rheometer. The systems studied were copolymers of ethylene and acrylic or methacrylic acid. Hydrogen bonding was found to substantially enhance both flow activation energy and viscosity level, as well as the degree of dependence of viscosity on rate of shear. It was also found that hydrogen bonding does not influence the critical shear stress for onset of “melt fracture.” The data support the view that hydrogen bonds act effectively as temporary (quasi-) crosslinks during the short time scales of deformation involved in flow at high shear rates.

    Notes: The laser-excited Raman vibrational spectrum of poly-L-alanine has been obtained. The Raman spectrum is compared with the infrared spectrum and vibrational frequencies calculated from normal coordinate analysis. The symmetric modes of the α-helix appear with strong intensity in the Raman spectrum. A large number of skeletal modes are obtained in this Raman spectrum for the first time.

    Notes: Drops of various antisera against human proteins were placed onto hydrophilic or hydrophobic surfaces that had adsorbed human proteins. The rinsed and dried plates were exposed to water vapor. Wherever an antiserum droplet had resided on a matching protein film, vapor scattered least light, indicating greatest wetting. The protein deposited within 5 seconds by plasma onto glass proved to be fibrinogen.

    Notes: The influences of conditioning treatments and surface topography on the heparin adsorptivity and the thromboresistance of a high-strength, impermeable, isotropic, pyrolytic carbon were investigated. The results of the adsorption studies indicate that the adsorption of heparin on such carbon surfaces is near the amount required for monolayer formation. The adsorbed heparin is rapidly elutriated in plasma. The heparin adsorption is not enhanced by a pretreatment with benzalkonium chloride. There was no relationship between the amount of heparin adsorbed on these materials and their compatibility with blood. Polishing, for example, which reduced heparin adsorption, enhanced the tromboresistance of these carbons, and while chemisorption of oxygen markedly reduced their thromboresistance, it did not influence the amount of heparin that could be adsorbed. In vivo tests showed that polished and outgassed, impermeable isotropic carbons deposited at low temperatures were significantly thromboresistant without the exogenous application of heparin. Examples of applications of these new materials in experimental valves are presented.

    Notes: The 100 MHz proton magnetic resonance (PMR) spectra of free radical alternating ω-alkyl-α-olefin/SO2 copolymers has been investigated. The data obtained from the quantitative evaluation of the spectra are consistent with a copolymer structure containing unrearranged olefinic monomer units. The 4-methyl-1-pentene/SO2 copolymer shows a quadruplet resonance in the CH3 proton region. This multiplicity, observed also in the analogous 1,2-dichloro-4-methylpentane and 1,2-dibromo-4-methylpentane, arises from the presence of magnetically nonequivalent CH3 protons located in the vicinity of the asymmetric carbon atoms of the main chain. There is no detectable nonequivalency of CH3 protons in the 5-methyl-1-hexene/SO2 copolymer, probably because the center of asymmetry is further removed from the isopropyl group. In poly-4-methyl-1-pentene, prepared with Ziegler-Natta catalyst, the polymer structure around the main chain tertiary carbons is fairly symmetrical; and, as expected, the CH3 protons of the isopropyl group are magnetically equivalent.

    Notes: New, bifunctional, bridgehead-substituted triptycenes were synthesized and used to prepare a series of triptycene polymers, including polyesters, polyamides, polyurethanes, and a polyoxadiazole. Certain of these partially aliphatic polymers were thermally stable. Clear and colorless films were obtained in some instances.

    Notes: Kinetics of the polymerization of methyl methacrylate with the VOCl3—AlEt3 catalyst system at 40°C in n-hexane have been studied. A linear dependence of rate of polymerization on the monomer and catalyst concentrations as well as an overall activation energy of 5.87 kcal/mole were found. Characterization of the structure of the polymer by NMR spectra revealed the presence of stereoblock units. The mechanism of polymerization is discussed in relation to the kinetic data obtained.

    Notes: A method is presented for the treatment of distribution functions obtained by ultra-centrifugal sedimentation velocity experiments on the plasma lipoproteins, so that adequate corrections can he made for the effects of diffusion and concentration dependence of the sedimentation coefficient. The method involves the use of modified equations derived from those presented in 1952 by Gosting for the transform from g* (S) to g(S) distributions. The evaluation of the molecular parameters of lipoprotein density and size, from a set of g(Si°) distribution functions obtained in solvents of varying density, is also outlined. Preparations of the β-lipoprotein of human plasma are found to follow a bivariate normal distribution that requires evaluation of five parameters, x̄1, σ1, x̄2, σ2and p. The first two represent the mean and standard deviation of the lipoprotein density, the third and fourth the same quantities for the size, expressed as ft “logarithmic diameter parameter”, and the final value is a measure of the correlation between these two variables.
