Notes: The π-electron distributions, spin densities, and energies of the first triplets of the nucleotide bases, uracil, thymine, cytosine, adenine, and guanine, were investigated in various semiempirical approximations. Results are presented for calculations using the semiempirical form of the closed-shell SCF configuration interaction method, of the different orbitals for different spins (unrestricted Hartree-Fock) treatment, with and without spin projection, and of the Roothaan's open-shell procedure.

Notes: Studies have been made of the γ-induced emulsion polymerization of styrene and comparisons made with chemically initiated emulsion polymerization. The polymerization proceeded smoothly to high conversions at 0 and 60°C, the reaction showing a high G (monomer) value. Complete conversions were obtained with total doses of less than 0.05 Mrad. In accordance with the behavior expected of systems having a constant rate of initiation, the molecular weight was found to decrease with decreasing temperature. The molecular weight and particle size distributions were narrower than those obtained in chemically initiated emulsion polymerizations at the same temperature. The radiation-induced emulsion polymerization of vinyl acetate proceeded smoothly at temperatures in the range 0-50°C to give polymers of much higher molecular weight than these obtained from chemically initiated polymerizations at the same temperature. Complete conversion was attained after a dose of 0.02 Mrad for latices approaching 50% solids. The elimination of ionic endgroups in the poly(vinyl acetate) radicals tends to drive the polymerization from the aqueous phase, resulting in faster rates and higher molecular weights than are obtained from chemically initiated systems. Rates of polymerization were found to be independent of temperature and the molecular weight of the polymer to be independent of dose rate. Latices of poly(vinyl acetate) of high solids content were evaluated for latex and film properties and found to have improvements over commercially available samples in both areas, especially in clarity of film and scrub resistance. A number of acrylate and maleate esters were copolymerized with vinyl acetate in a radiation-initiated emulsion system. High molecular weight copolymers were produced after low dose.

Notes: A new photoredox catalyst is described wherein a phenothiazine dye in its excited state oxidizes a catalyst to a free radical. This free radical efficiently initiates the polymerization of metal acrylates giving rise to polymers which are insoluble in the monomer-containing medium. The polymers precipitate as insoluble colloidal particles. Optical transmission measurements are used to follow the polymerization and to calculate the number and size of the polymer particles. The effect of various factors such as the nature of the catalyst and the photooxidant, the pH and the temperature of the medium on photopolymerization are described. It is indicated that this new system may be useful for rapid photographic imaging and display applications.

Notes: The addition of methyl radicals to tetrafluoroethylene in the gas phase has been studied over the temperature range 80-180°C, using a material balance method. \documentclass{article}\pagestyle{empty}\begin{document}$$ {\rm CH}_{\rm 3} + {\rm C}_2 {\rm F}_{\rm 4} \to {\rm CH}_3 {\rm C}_2 {\rm F}_4 $$\end{document}Arrhenius parameters of 1011.95±0.23 (mole-1 cm3 sec-1) and 5.7 ± 0.4 (kcal/mole) have been measured for the addition reaction.Electrophilic reagents such as O or CF3 appear to react almost equally readily with ethylene and tetrafluoroethylene but methyl radicals add much more rapidly to tetrafluoroethylene than to ethylene, the difference in reactivity being principally due to an activation energy difference of ∼2 kcal/mole.

Notes: 4-Vinylbiphenyl-isoprene ABA block copolymers were prepared by initiating 4-vinylbiphenyl with n-butyllithium in benzene, adding isoprene, and coupling the resulting AB anion with phosgene. Preliminary coupling experiments with a polyisoprene anion have shown that virtually quantitative coupling could be achieved provided the phosgene was added extremely slowly. The block copolymers could be quantitatively analyzed by gel-permeation chromatography from a knowledge of the ratio of the refractive index increments of the two homopolymers and the overall composition.

Notes: Some experimental data are given on the infrared spectra between 3300 and 3500 cm-1 of dilute solutions in carbon tetrachloride of three types of model compounds: CH3-CONH-CH(R1)-CONH(R2), (I); CH3-CON(CH3)-CH(R1)-CONH(R2), (II) and CH3-CONH-CH(R1)-CON(R2)2, (III). In studying the N-H stretching bands, it was found that there are two types of intramolecular hydrogen bonds in these molecules; these result in two different cyclized conformations, C5 and C7, which contain respectively, five and seven atoms in the ring. By using model substances I, II, and III, in which the nitrogen atoms are unequally substituted, it is possible to identify the N-H stretching bands which are to be ascribed to the N-H oscillators included in the two different chelated conformations. It is found also that the stretching frequency of a free N-H oscillator depends upon the substituent on the nitrogen atom. Thus, it is possible to observe, with some of the model compounds I, four different absorption bands located at 3340, 3420, 3440, and 3460 cm-1. The first two are ascribed to the N-H oscillators included in the H—bonds which lock the C7 and C5 conformations; the last two correspond to free N-H which differ with the substituent on the nitrogen atom.

Notes: Biological membranes consist mainly of lipids and proteins. At present, the structure of the lipid phase appears to be established, but hypotheses on the molecular organization of the protein are difficult to support. Thus the deformation behavior of whole human erythrocyte ghosts, ghosts after the selective removal of lipids and ghosts stripped of lipids as well as nonlipid components have been examined in the hope of securing indirect information on the organization of the protein. It has been found that large localized deformations result in partial membrane failure and long uniformly wide fibrils, frequently in excess of 3000 Å, are drawn across the rupture. These data are interpreted in terms of currently favored membrane models and the possibility of a fibrous membrane framework consisting predominantly of protein is reviewed. The behavior of the membrane in its various stages of extraction is compared and contrasted to that of synthetic polymer films of known organization.
