    Description: Observations simultaneously made at visual (B, V, and R) wavelengths, at 1, 1.4, and 3.4 mm and at 1.3, 2, 6, and 20 cm of 9 QSOs and BL Lac objects are reported. The range of the millimeter-visual spectral index alpha sub mv was only 0.65-0.82, typical of optically thin synchrotron emission. This may indicate that the electrons radiating synchrotron emission in this portion of the spectrum are not subjected to large radiation losses, and therefore relativistic bulk motion with Doppler factors of about 10 are required. The visual spectral index is much more broadly distributed and typically larger than alpha sub mv. The spectral energy distributions have not changed much in the last two to five years except for 2251+15 and perhaps 0235+164. Only 1749+09 shows a sharp spectral break shortward of 1 mm. Sixteen other sources were observed at 1 mm, of which seven were detected.

    Description: Hardware for the International Solar Polar Mission (ISPM) Unified Radio and Plasma (URAP) wave experiment is presented. The URAP determines direction and polarization of distant radio sources for remote sensing of the heliosphere, and studies local wave phenomena which determine the transport coefficients of the ambient plasma. Electric and magnetic field antennas and preamplifiers; the electromagnetic compatibility plan and grounding; radio astronomy and plasma frequency receivers; a fast Fourier transformation data processing unit waveform analyzer; dc voltage measurements; a fast envelope sampler for the solar wind, and plasmas near Jupiter; a sounder; and a power converter are described.

    Description: Deuterium-enriched hydrogen is present in organic matter in such meteorites as noncarbonaceous chondrites. The majority of the unequilibrated primitive meteorites contain hydrogen whose D/H ratios are greater than 0.0003, requiring enrichment (relative to cosmic hydrogen) by isotope exchange reactions taking place below 150 K. The D/H values presented are the lower limits for the organic compounds derived from interstellar molecules, since all processes subsequent to their formation, including terrestrial contamination, decrease their D/H ratios. In contrast, the D/H ratios of hydrogen associated with hydrated silicates are relatively uniform for the meteorites analyzed. The C-13/C-12 ratios of organic matter, irrespective of D/H ratio, lie well within those observed for the earth. Present findings suggest that other interstellar material, in addition to organic matter, is preserved and is present in high D/H ratio meteorites.

    Description: An investigation was conducted in order to determine whether water immersion to the neck (NI) alters plasma catecholamines in normal humans. Eight normal subjects were studied during a seated control study (C) and during 4 hr of NI, and the levels of norepinephrine (NE) and epinephrine (E) as determined by radioenzymatic assay were measured hourly. Results show that despite the induction of a marked natriuresis and diuresis indicating significant central hypervolemia, NI failed to alter plasma NE or E levels compared with those of either C or the corresponding prestudy 1.5 hr. In addition, the diuresis and natriuresis was found to vary independently of NE. These results indicate that the response of the sympathetic nervous system to acute volume alteration may differ from the reported response to chronic volume expansion.

    Description: A critical discussion is presented on the use by Etkins and Epstein (1982) of combined surface air temperature and sea level time series to draw conclusions concerning the discharge of the polar ice sheets. It is objected by Robock that they used Northern Hemisphere land surface air temperature records which are unrepresentative of global sea surface temperature, and he suggests that externally imposed volcanic dust and CO2 forcings can adequately account for observed temperature changes over the last century, with global sea level changing in passive response to sea change as a result of thermal expansion. Hansen et al. adduce evidence for global cooling due to ice discharge that has not exceeded a few hundredths of a degree centigrade in the last century, precluding any importance of this phenomenon in the interpretation of global mean temperature trends for this period. Etkins and Epstein reply that since their 1982 report additional evidence has emerged for the hypothesis that the polar ice caps are diminishing. It is reasserted that each of the indices discussed, including global mean sea surface temperature and sea level, polar ice sheet mass balance, water mass characteristics, and the spin rate and axis of rotation displacement of the earth, are physically linked and can be systematically monitored, as is currently being planned under the auspices of the National Climate Program.

    Description: Disk average brightness temperatures of Mercury were obtained using a 4.6 m radio telescopes. The data was searched for periodicities which correlate with phase angle, hermocentric longitude and beat frequencies produced by modulations of various celestial mechanical parameters. Spectral line observations were made of Venus with the NRAO 11 m radio telescope. The total CO content and the CO vertical profile, and their variability were observed. Large scale thermophysical properties of the surface of Mars were studied.

    Description: The envelopes of nonmagnetic neutron stars are studied using the best available opacities and equation of state. The general relativistic equations of the structure and evolution of nonmagnetic neutron stars are discussed, and it is shown that they can be reduced to a single equation for calculating the thermal structure of neutron star envelopes. The physical input needed to solve the thermal structure equation is investigated and the numerical results of envelope model calculations are presented. It is shown that the thermal structure of neutron star envelopes is determined by the single parameter T(s) to the 4th/g(s), where T(s) is the effective surface temperature and g(s) the surface gravity of the star. This result is used to derive a number of other scaling relations, and the effects of general relativity on the envelope thermal structure are examined in detail. The results of a sensitivity analysis of the regional opacity needed to obtain a reliable relationship between the temperatures of the inner and outer boundaries of the envelope is presented.

    Description: A method is given for determining the sensitivity of certain types of calculations to the uncertainties in the input physics or model parameters; this method is applicable to problems that involve solutions to coupled, ordinary differential equations. In particular the sensitivity of calculations of the thermal structure of neutron star envelopes to uncertainties in the opacity and equation of state is examined. It is found that the uncertainties in the relationship between the surface and interior temperatures of a neutron star are due almost entirely to the imprecision in the values of the conductive opacity in the region where the ions form a liquid; here the conductive opacity is, for the most part, due to the scattering of electrons from ions.

    Description: Extensive 3.5-mm measurements are reported which show a variation in the brightness temperature of Mars, with the Central Meridian Longitude that is generally in phase with the variation at 2.8 cm and is opposite in sign from the variations at 20 microns. It is pointed out that the phase result is not unexpected, since 3.5 mm is longer than the wavelength at which the phase behavior is expected to change. The result that the 3.5-mm rotation curve amplitude is larger than the amplitudes at both 20 microns and 2.8 cm, however, is unexpected. This result, it is noted, can be explained as a consequence of subsurface scattering from rocks smaller than 1.5 cm in radius. A correlation of subsurface scatterers with the location of the high-thermal inertial regions would be consistent with the hypothesis that rock abundance predominates in determining the thermal inertia.
