Notes: Experimental methods for estimating the thermodynamic derivative, (∂T/∂P)s, of both liquids and solids are described and discussed. The adiabatic heating parameter is shown to be useful, in conjunction with other more commonly measured properties, for estimating the heat capacity, Cp = T(∂S/∂T)p, and the internal pressure, Pi = (∂U/∂V)T. The principles for applying adiabatic heating measurements to the characterization of polymers are given with data for several common liquids and for filled and unfilled polyurethane rubbers.

Notes: Maximum extraction stress and integrated extraction work were measured for sutures implanted for 3, 7, and 14 day periods. Six common non-absorbable sutures, representative of braided and monofilamentary forms, were implanted subdermally and were used for cutaneous incision closure with purebred pointer dogs. The data show: (1) Braided sutures, polyester/Teflon, silk-type B, and silk-silicone interacted with peripheral tissue to a significantly greater degree than the monofilamentary types, nylon, polypropylene, and polyethylene; (2) polyester-Teflon braided suture interacted to a lesser degree than the other braided sutures; (3) the relatively intense interaction of plain silk and silicone-treated silk appears to reflect the combined effects of mechanical aspects of braiding and of biochemical response; and (4) all braided sutures swelled over the implantation periods with as much as a 70% increase in diameter after 14 days for silk.

Notes: Homopolymers and copolymers were prepared from methyl methacrylate, methyl acrylate, and styrene by radical reactions at 60°C. Monomers suitably labeled with carbon-14 were used so that it was possible to monitor the hydrolysis of ester groups in the polymers during treatment under alkaline conditions. It was found that methyl acrylate units were hydrolyzed completely whatever their environment in a polymer chain. Under the same conditions only about 9% of the ester groups in a homopolymer of methyl methacrylate reacted; the proportion was increased by the introduction of comonomer units into the polymer chain. For copolymers of methyl methacrylate with methyl acrylate the extent of reaction may be correlated with the lengths of the sequences of methyl methacrylate units.

Notes: Attempts have been made unsuccessfully to homopolymerize a number of allyl esters of substituted fatty acids by radical initiation in emulsion systems. Copolymerizations of these allyl esters with styrene, methyl methacrylate, and vinyl chloride have been investigated. Of these comonomers, styrene and methyl methacrylate do not copolymerize well with the allyl esters, whereas vinyl chloride does. Reactivity ratios for the radical copolymerization of allyl 11-iodoundecanoate, M1, and vinyl chloride, M2, determined at 60°C. in benzene, are r1 = 0.42 and r2 = 1.64. A copolymer of allyl 10, 11-dibromoundecanoate and vinyl chloride was fractionated and found to be fairly homogeneous.

Notes: The polymerization of 2,2,2-trifluoroethyl vinyl ether by six different catalyst systems was examined. Low-temperature studies (-78°C) with boron trifluoride etherate catalyst in hydrocarbon and chlorinated solvents slowly yielded low molecular weight polymers which were amorphous and noncrystallizable upon cold drawing. Under similar conditions, polymerizations with boron trifluoride gas were spontaneous, quantitative, and gave relatively high molecular weight, form-stable, amorphous polymer. Heterogeneous polymerizations with chromium trioxide crystals in toluene at 68°C and bulk reactions with ethylmagnesium bromide-carbon tetrachloride catalyst at 40°C failed to produce polymer. Room temperature runs with triisobutylaluminum-titanium tetrachloride catalyst gave amorphous, tacky material. Aluminum hexahydrosulfate heptahydrate (AHS) initiated polymerizations conducted at 25 and 60°C gave low yields of mixtures of amorphous and crystalline polymers, the ratio depending upon the polymerization solvent employed. The infrared spectra and x-ray diffraction intensity curves of crystalline and amorphous poly(trifluoroethyl vinyl ether) are reported and compared herein for the first time.

Notes: The optical rotatory dispersion, hypochromism, and proton magnetic resonance were measured for a number of dinucleoside phosphates in both dilute salt solutions and in 25.2% LiCl (which freezes below -70°C.) as a function of temperature. Two models for the “disordering” of dinucleoside phosphates: the two-state model and the oscillating dimer model, are used to analyze the data. Both models fit some of the data, but neither are completely satisfactory. Evidence is given for a dynamic structure of dinucleoside phosphates, in which the bases oscillate with respect to one another, remaining parallel to one another with no solvent in between, even at high temperatures. Implications of this model to the structures of single-strand sections of RNA's are discussed.

Notes: Using potential energy formulas for variation of bond angles and for ω-distortion, the conformation of minimum energy for the cisform of the petide unit has been worked out. This agrees very well with the corresponding set of atoms in the crystal structure of Leu-Pro-Gly and the dimensions of a standard cispeptide unit are given based on these. The conformational (φ,Ψ) map for a cispeptide unit has been worked out from contact criteria, both for a pair of linked units as well as for-helices having constant (φ,Ψ). The small allowed region of the helical map contains the conformation experimentally observed for poly-L-proline I.

Notes: Phosphorescence and fluorescence from the dye in complexes of DNA with 9-amino-acridine and acridine orange in a glycerol-H2O glass have been measured at 77°K. The dependence of the p/fratio for 9-aminoacridine on the exciting wavelength demonstrates triplet-triplet energy transfer from DNA to dye. The result provides evidence for π electron overlap between the dye and the bases of native DNA. The observation that the magnitude of the enhancement in ultraviolet-excited dye phosphorescence increases with the base to dye ratio indicates triplet delocalization in the polymer. Preliminary flash experiments provide evidence that this delocalization is not limited by slow diffusion of the triplet exciton. The inability to detect transfer on denaturation of the DNA illustrates the sensitivity of triplet-triplet energy transfer to the conformation of the macromolecular complex.
