Notes: [Auszug] There are now techniques for the preparation of mono-disperse aerosols of polystyrene particles, labelled with radio-nuclides, and suitable for inhalation by volunteers3. This has made it possible to study the plutonium calibration problem in vivo., using radio-nuclides which decay by orbital ...

Notes: Abstract A study has been made of some chemical and ultrastructural changes that occur in the hyphal, arthrospore and sporangiospore walls ofMucor ramannianus during lysis by a soil streptomycete. Arthrospore and hyphal walls, which were shown to contain chitin, chitosan, other polysaccharides and phosphate (principally as polyphosphate), were lysed by culture fluid of the streptomycete after this organism had been grown on the same material. Alcohol-insoluble material found in the supernatants of the incubation mixtures gave on hydrolysis glucosamine, galactose, mannose and fucose. No laminarinase activity was detected in these culture fluids. Culture fluids of the streptomycete after growth on chitin and chitosan were also found to lyse the walls of arthrospores and hyphae. Despite the chemical similarities the walls were very different in thin section. A major component in the sporangiospore walls was glucan and an active laminarinase was shown to be present in the culture fluids of the streptomycete after growth on them. Further, ultrathin sections showed that an inner fibrillar layer of the sporangiospore wall was lysed leaving an outer electron-dense layer.

Notes: [Auszug] In this study we have been able to isolate living phloem tissue from the petioles of the umbellifer Heracleum mantegazzianum Somm. et Lev. grown in pots for ease of handling in the laboratory. Phloem bundles were dissected apart while remaining attached to the intact plant, a technique pioneered by ...

Notes: Summary The structure of hydrofluorides with the composition MeF2 · HF(Me=Sr, Ba) includes two anions: F− and HF2 − with a linear hydrogen bond. In SrF2 · HF, the hydrogen bond is characterized by a more asymmetrical position of the proton than in BaF2 · HF. Increasing the number of added HF molecules leads to the formation of two bifluoride ions in the compounds CaF2 · 2HF and SrF2 · 2.5HF. The hydrogen bond in this case is also nonsymmetrical, and the average F−H distance is equal to 1.17 A. Thus, the hydrogen bond in these compounds is of the same order as in KF · 2HF (rF−F=2.33 A) [12],i.e., weaker than in KF · HF (rF−F=2.26 A) [13], but stronger than in solid HF (rF−F=2.49 A) [14]. A structure with two polyfluoride anions evidently corresponds to the compound BaF2 · 3HF.

Notes: Summary Phenotypically there appeared to exist no diversity in different individual plants in a population ofCalotropis procera. The diversity in imbibition and germination behaviour of seeds from different plants was revealed only after detailed studies were undertaken. Seeds from six individual plants were collected and stored separately for a period of two years. Ordinarily the seeds of this species did not exhibit any dormancy and were found to germinate immediately after harvest. Two years old seeds did not loose their viability in any of the six lots indicated above. It was discovered that the weight and size of seeds, the rate of imbibition of water, the amount of water imbibed, the loss of water upon drying, the rate of germination, the percentage of germination, and the germination behaviour in continuous illumination and total darkness, all exhibited diversity to some extent in the six lots studied. It was evident that there did not exist seeds exhibiting homogeneous behaviour in a population ofCalotropis procera.

Notes: Crosslinked samples of polyethylene were prepared by electron irradiation of both high- and low-density polymers in the crystalline state. A further crosslinked sample was obtained by curing a high-density polyethylene by reaction with dicumyl peroxide at 180°C. The stress-strain-birefringenece relations were obtained on specimens cut from these samples at temperatures between 130 and 250°C. All samples showed a substantial decrease in stress-optical coefficient with increasing degree of crosslinking and with increasing temperature. The stress-optical properties at each temperature were extrapolated to zero degree of crosslinking to give quantities characteristic of the Gaussian network. Comparison of these properties with the theory of networks of rotational isomeric chains with both independent and interdependent rotation allows estimates to be obtained for (1) the trans-gauche energy differences in rotation around skeletal bonds and (2) the difference in principal optical polarizabilities for the CH2 group in the elastomeric state. This latter quantity is shown to be more nearly given by Denbigh's than by Bunn and Daubeny's bond polarizability values.
